Although the cover story has come on the market again, the reader – in the test we had the model without WLAN module – was disappointed. The device itself – including the included protective cover and the operation via touchscreen (or pen) – has been quite successful. In addition, there are additional functions such as the possibility to use the device as dictation device via the built-in microphone.

But the buyer of the non-WLAN version remains completely unclear how and where to buy digital books. Here neither manual nor the complicated software for the PC help. Also annoying are the mirrored and contrast-poor display as well as error messages, that pictures with "wrong" resolution can not be displayed.
Pearl eLyricon EBX-600.E-Ink
The first impression of the Anjeeta reader, which is distributed over Pearl is good: No other manufacturer offers so much equipment with printed instructions, USB cable, headphones, charger and protective case. But this is all that is positive.
Sony touch edition PRS-650
Because the processing is poor: the power switch wobbles, the keys of the keyboard are unevenly printed, stripes appear on the display and the micro SD card becomes a gamble.
Thalia OYO
However, the Pearl Reader does not convince itself of these shortcomings: the display is as strong as no other in the test; in the case of large letters, gaps between the letters appear in the word, the device reacts sluggishly to touch and turn. Finally, the organization of music and e-books is to be criticized. At a bargain price, you could ignore everything - but not for 170 euros.
The new RPS-650 model from Sony convinces on the whole line: the display with Pearl technology is outstanding, the reader reacts to touch printing and touching the screen immediately and the operation is intuitive without a glance into the manual. The sound of the music player can be heard, everything works perfectly.
The easy-to-use software allows access to various online bookstores such as Thalia or Libri, where you can buy e-books and transfer them to the reader. All this assures Sony the test victory. As an icing on cake, only WLAN is missing, which would allow the direct purchase of books without a PC. In the US, such a device is already offered as a PRS-950.
The device, which was introduced in the fall, offers an uncomplicated way to buy e-books with a direct link to the online shop of the book chain. The concept thus follows that of Amazon with the Kindle. At www.thalia.de several tens of thousands of e-books are currently available. The Medion-made reader with capacitive touchscreen is easy and intuitive.
Overall, Thalia understands with its device best to address technologyless people. However, there are also clear weaknesses: Thus, the OYO pronounced sluggish and the writing on the screen is somewhat contrast-poor. The result is a cheap, compact, somewhat slow device with good book shop connectivity. An OYO model with UMTS module is planned.
The name already reflects the hermetic existence of the reader: "eBook Player 7". Is it a music and video player or an e-book reader? Trekstor has tried a compromise: because the colored LCD display can be viewed pictures - and in the video version synonymous movies. It is also possible to read a book on the 7-inch display, but the Trekstor device is not suitable as a permanent reading companion.
The battery is empty after barely eight hours, missing standard functions like the jump to a certain chapter, in addition, the allowed viewing angle on the display is quite small. The video version for about 40 euros extra is a quite successful compromise, but instead of the standard version you better access a real and easier e-book reader.
