The history of the HD recorders with built-in Blu-ray burners and all possible Panasonic conversion functions is a real engineering story that is now going on in the fifth year.
The third tuner
Function miracles were the Panasonic recorders from the beginning, and sometimes even specialists were missing the vision for what is still possible in this device class. Panasonic recently equipped its Smart TVs more and more with recorder features, so that the departure of the pure-bodied recording equipment was always approved. The responsible product manager in the industry small talk always answered with a smile: "This is certainly something that our engineers can still remember."

Space to the swing
Clearly, features from specialized devices are inherited into other classes. The Panasonic recorders were among the first devices on the market, the recordings and live TV streamed over the network. Today, many other devices from almost all manufacturers - just think of satellite IP servers or TVs with second-screen streaming.
Top player and recorder
Live watching, recording, streaming: A receiving device has more and more tasks today. When they are fully deployed, the reception areas are almost as fast as the next generation in the living room KiKA, while Papa next door looks the sports show, then with previous devices no recording is possible. Time for another tuner - and that is exactly what Panasonic introduces in the satellite and cable top models of the new recorder series, the DMR-BST940 or BCT940.
In the DVB-C model, the third tuner is simply supplied with the cable signal, but the DMR-BST940 requires a Unicable reception system to supply all three receivers independently with satellite signals. This has the Panasonic with its competitor Humax iCord Evolution together, which in a single device even four tuners united - and also recordings as well as live TV streams over the network.
The three receivers allow all possible combinations of use in the Panasonic: three programs can be recorded in parallel, while a fourth can be viewed from the hard disk as several parallel live broadcasts - one on the TV, a second via streaming. Even then, a reception part is still available for recordings.
Up to now live broadcasts and recordings from the hard disk within the domestic network could be streamed on tablets or smartphones. With the new TV Anywhere function, this also works outside. The recorder converts live broadcasts and recordings to the outgoing Internet bandwidth into a space-saving video format and transmits broadcasts to the network. This is the new Panasonic app MediaConnect, which is available for Android and Apple mobile devices. In the reverse direction, the app is also used to remotely program the recorder. However, this already supported the predecessor recorders.
With three tuners you can record a lot. Panasonic engineers have also taken this into account. In the 940s, they doubled the hard drive size compared to the previous top models: Two terabytes are available for over 1000 hours HDTV recordings. Who still thinks about capacities in SD?
In order not to lose track of possible programs, the recorder can even program its own programming on request: The keyword recording function automatically records all programs that carry a certain term in the title or description, for example, all the crime scene Or all movies with Will Smith. The recordings end up in their own folder and are overwritten there regularly, unless they are archived or protected.
As in the previous years, the new Panasonic recorders were not cheaper, as is usual in the TV business. However, they also offer more features, more storage space and a very good quality.
The recording and archiving functions of the tested cable model DMR-BCT940 were exemplary as with the predecessors. As a DVD / Blu-ray player, it also connects to the current technology. In addition to 3-D with two HDMI outputs, the newcomer now also offers UHD upscaling. Also, thanks to two HDMI jacks, it can supply an older AV receiver without UHD transmission with the best surround sound, while a UHD TV refers to the picture from the other HDMI socket.
The qualities of the DMR-BCT940 as a DVD and Blu-ray player were also high-class. In the laboratory, for example, he showed a perfect color reproduction, which was fully confirmed by the visual inspection. In all cases, the HD-Scaling and De-Interlacing feature is not one-hundred percent on the reference level of the top-of-the-line DMP-BDT700.
Conclusion
This can be a pain, however: The noble device as a pure Blu-ray player costs just 550 euros. At the same time, the display can also be adapted to the lighting situation in the room or to the characteristics of the display used in practice-oriented presets.
TVs have two tuners, recorder now three. The new recorder generation from Panasonic punishes with clever features and high quality all the lies that have been evoking the end of the VCR for years. In the recorder market, the HD Blu-ray models from Panasonic remain the measure of all things.
Triple Tuner: Three parallel recordings are possible. The Satellite TV requires a Unicable port, TV Anywhere: Live TV and recordings over the network - now worldwide via the Internet, keyword recording: automatic recording by key phrase
