Opera 15 is now available: The Norwegian browser-maker Opera is breaking new ground. After a few weeks of public beta tests, it presents a new generation of browsers. Opera 15 is no longer based on the in-house Presto engine, but on Google’s HTML renderer blink. This is a split-off of the Apple webkit engine.
For web developers, this means that in future they will only have to consider three browser engines: Trident (Internet Explorer), Gecko (Firefox, Seamonkey) and Webkit (Chrome, Safari, Opera). This is all the easier because all modern browsers already support essential parts of the HTML 5 standard.
With version 15 the Norwegians also introduce a similar division of Opera versions for different target groups like Google. Opera Stable is the output for those who just want to use the browser. A new stable version should appear every few weeks. OperaNext is the beta branch where you can search for errors that should be fixed before the stable version. Here, there are more frequent updates. Opera Developer is the most recent development, and there are some coarser errors.
The now released Stable version of Opera 15 is certainly not the final word of the Opera developers in terms of functionality. One of the most important innovations of Opera 15 is that OperaMail is no longer included. It has already been available as a separate program for several weeks. The Quick Dial ("Speed Dial") is even more flexible in Opera 15. Like Chrome, Opera 15 has a combined address and search bar.
Stash "is a drop-down list on the home page, where web pages with address, metadata, and a screenshot can be saved, and the list can be searched by keyword." Discover "is a new feature that proposes new web content to the user Suggestions can be filtered by categories, by location or language.
The previous version, Opera 12.x, with Presto Engine, Bittorrent client and integrated mail function, will be supplied with security updates by the end of the year. Opera 12.16 is scheduled to appear soon.
