Prezi is the alternative to Powerpoint. With this service, your presentations will surprise you with their imaginative features and creative presentations. We have a guide and tips for your presentations.
1. Prezi instead of Powerpoint: great templates, unusual layout
Microsoft's Powerpoint has its best days. Since 2009, the Startup Prezi has competed against the Powerpoint domination. Until now, the software was only available in English. Since the end of January, the Powerpoint Killer has also been available in German. In the meantime, well-known companies such as KMG, DER Tourismus or SAP in Prezi see an alternative to PowerPoint.
2. Import images, sounds, Youtube media into Prezi
The brain thinks in pictures. This is exactly what Prezi uses - it is above all a visual application, which does not want to limit itself to a 4: 3 area as classic presentations offer. Compared to classic presentation films, you do not have to worry about whether the workspace is sufficient for your thoughts and content.
3. Zoom and camera moves for more structure and overview
If you want to illuminate an idea, simply zoom in at the point deeper into the presentation. Because with Prezi, it is possible to drag the digital film in all directions with the mouse and zoom in and out as desired. Sounds unusual, but works well. However, at Prezi, you need to know exactly what information you want to convey and how you want to structure it.
4. Path instead of slide for slide
When the structure is up, the rest is quite simple: a large stock of layouts already allows you to create very artistically appealing presentations in the free basic version. The selection is done with a few clicks, the layouts are self-explanatory. However, you should spend some time to find a really suitable template on your topic.
If you do not find anything suitable or rather creative, you can also choose a blank template and a corresponding theme, which will help you navigate through your lecture.
Whether you use a finished template or create a layout yourself - you are working on a whiteboard. You can use the Insert menu item to include pictures, videos or sound contributions in the presentation. If you do not have pictures, pictures can be imported into the presentation using Google.
To be legally not to be prosecuted, there is the possibility to include only pictures licensed for commercial purposes. For this purpose, a checkmark can be set so that only appropriately licensed material is displayed. Pictures provide for easier understanding, speak the emotions, and make it easier for us to remember a statement.
You should use this in your lectures. Tip: Use images sparingly, but effectively! The pictures should not be too big, because then Prezi runs no longer liquid. And you should also dose texts more homoeopathically. If the presentation is only published online, it may be a bit more text. If the presentation should support a presentation, keep the text tight.
What distinguishes Prezi from Powerpoint are the camera moves. In order to present a topic in a clear way, the bird perspective is the starting point for clarifying connections. From the bird's perspective, you zoom in to the presentation to illuminate the details. So you are navigating from the major points to the sub-points and details that you want to explain.
To zoom back into the bird's eye view and to see your entire Prezi, just move the mouse pointer to the right side of the whiteboard. A button with a plus and minus sign and a house symbol appears immediately. This works in both editing and presentation modes. The zoom buttons allow you to go deeper into the details. Click on the Home button, zoom out of the screen and have a complete overview.
If you do this when you open a new Prezi, it is ensured that you do not insert the new content too far away from already existing content. You determine the camera travels via frames. To this end, each image and text element is placed in a frame and defined as it is to be zoomed in.
The individual objects on your whiteboard, which you want to zoom in during your presentation, should not be too far apart, otherwise the camera drive zooms too fast. 5. Working together on a Prezi
Prezi helps you to tell your story with a clear thread. To do so, you must link the individual points of your presentation. This happens at Prezi via paths. To create a path, click the pencil icon in the left sidebar, and then click the objects you want to present in the order. The preview images of the camera settings will appear in the sidebar on the left.
To change the order, just hold down the left mouse button on one of the thumbnails and drag it to the desired new position. You can also do this on the canvas by moving the blue, numbered path points. To delete a path point, either click the red X in the left sidebar, or drag the path point away from the object on the canvas and drop it into an empty area of the canvas
6. Prezi Presentations on Facebook and online or go to
For each frame that you have provided with a path point, you can also set a simple animation for the contents of the corresponding frame. To do this, click on the corresponding asterisk in the left-hand sidebar and in the following window in the order of the objects within the frame in which they should appear in the presentation mode.
Prezi is helping to create a new kind of cooperation. For this purpose, you can send your colleagues an already almost finished presentation and ask for further detailed input or corrections. Or you first define only one theme or layout, then collect ideas and build the individual points together. You can send the link to your presentation using the menu item Share top right.
Simply enter the email address of your colleagues and assign read or write rights depending on how far you trust your colleagues. Afterwards, different team members can simultaneously work online at the presentation. All participants see the same screen and changes are displayed in real time for all. As soon as other colleagues open the Prezi, you will see their avatar on the Prezi workspace.

Once the presentation is ready, you can integrate it as an online link into your own website, share it on Facebook, download it as PDF or save it as a portable Prezi to take away. Prezi is free. However, all presentations are open to the public. If you are working on a company presentation that is not intended for the public, you can book the enjoy version (59 US dollars / year) or the pro version (159 US dollars / year). The prezitation is then private.
Prezi is also very well suited for a lively biography. Instead of listing in tabular form what you have already done, and what abilities you can provide, a picture helps to present your life. As a programmer, for example, you could use a hard disk as a background. The individual components on the circuit board symbolize your training, your professional experience, the projects you have participated in and special skills and knowledge. Each PCB component lists corresponding detailed information. When a component is clicked, Prezi zooms in, so all the information is good to read.
The Internet helps you to enhance the presentation of figures and statistics with knowledge and competence. There are many sources for powerful data. Two examples
Statista
Statista is an online statistics portal that provides access to statistical data from 18,000 sources. An intuitive search gives you access to studies and reports on topics from over 600 industries. Statista uses state institutions (including statistics offices, ministries), international organizations, trade journals and publications, market research institutes and scientific institutes, such as GESIS or DIW.
For 49 euros monthly Statista offers a flat rate on all statistics of the German-language database including automatic source reference, directly usable as PowerPoint and Excel download. For 199 euros a month, access to more than one million international statistics, 10000 studies and more than 1000 themed dossiers.
Statistical Offices of Federation & Countries
The federal government and the Länder collect a lot of data, including information on the population and the housing situation, education or prices, earnings and labor costs.
