Television today is equipped with processors that override any university data center in the 1970s. “This statement by the communications scientist Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rüdiger Kays outlines the motto of this year’s IFA , But from Smart TVs, and that’s not all that has the “smart” attribute at the upcoming IFA.
IFA shows smart technology
Traditionally, the trade press meets the IFA organizers and exhibitors well eight weeks before the start of the trade fair to learn about the trends of the world's largest trade fair for consumer electronics and, if available, to try them out. In order to research this year's trade fair motto, no journalistic insight was necessary. "Smart is supposed to be the fair," said Hans-Joachim Kamp, the chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Gesellschaft für Unterhaltung- und Kommunikationselektronik (gfu), right at the start of the Trendschau.

The fact that at least in the Smart TV still a lot is in the arrogance, Kamp immediately presented in the form of a brandnew study: in the United States are already already 34 percent of the households Smart TVs. Of these, however, only 58 percent are connected to the Internet. In the European comparison, we are therefore one of the closing lights. In Great Britain, for example, 86 per cent of Internet TV owners network their devices. The motto is thus to be understood: the fair is designed to make smart technologies experienceable. Smart TV, smart home, smart grid, smart city, smart phone - all this has its place at this year's IFA.
What is actually smart?
What does the word "smart" stand for at all? Some translate it simply with "smart", others with "wit", and even a certain "speed" speaks the dictionary to the concept. But ultimately, not only specialist journalists ask themselves: What is new at the smart IFA 2013? Which devices, technologies and developments do the manufacturers have in stock that stand out from the smart crowd?

Smart TVs, the TV-Mediatheken or one or the other app, are at least in video nothing new. Even online video stores, multi-room systems and smartphone apps as a remote control have long been a matter of course in our tests. Finally, there are such features for years.
But they still exist, the smart innovations. Just as five years ago in the smartphone, or earlier in the introduction of the Internet, the technical prerequisites for the networking of TV sets, refrigerators or electricity meters are given, but the developers and market strategies are looking for the sleek application because of the customers Their Smart TVs. We looked for these innovations in the TV and video environment and looked at the manufacturers: What innovations do the IFA innovations make smart? The answers ranged from individual highlight devices to the holistic vision of the television of the future.
TV technologies are the focus of some manufacturers - such as OLED at LG or Ultra HD at Samsung, Sony and Hisense. The XXL TVs with the fourfold Full HD resolution should not be missed at the IFA. They were already in the exhibition halls last year, but this year equipment is shown at prices below a medium-class car. At 1.999 euros, the fun starts, the Chinese manufacturer Hisense wants to bring a 127-centimeter UHD TV.
IFA 2013: ticket prices and ticket purchase
And even Samsung will introduce a 55-inch (140 cm) F9090 series for less than 5,000 euros. The most urgent question about UHD TVs, however, has remained unanswered so far: When and from what medium are ultra-HD movies on the mega-TVs? According to insiders, hard disk players, streaming services as well as an extension of the Blu-ray standard. For this fall, however, no market-ready solutions are still in sight so that the manufacturers point to the smart scaling functions and the high-resolution picture displays of their UHD TVs
LG also has UHD TVs in the program, but wants to score the IFA especially with the first series-series Curved OLED TV. The manufacturer promises market launch in small numbers to the IFA - even if competitors doubt that mass production of large-format OLED screens is as easy as it can be done, as LG announces it.
At IFA, the focus of the other manufacturers is less on the image technology of their new TV sets, but rather on intelligent technology on and off the TV screen. Philips will probably also present a UHD TV, but shows with a lot more enthusiasm an extension of the effective Ambilight TV lighting: Owners of the funnetz controllable Philips Hue LED lights can transfer the Ambilight effect of their Philips TVs to these lamps And control it with a smartphone or tablet app. Ambilight thus travels from the TV to the entire living room.
Sony, even today, UHD supplier, supplies more and more cameras, smartphones, notebooks as well as also TV devices and Blu-ray players with the NFC short range radio (Near Field Communication). This does not transmit any data, but allows a particularly simple contact between two devices via the network. Photos and other content can then be taken from the camera or mobile phone to the TV without a break.
The little difference
IFA 2013: opening hours and concert dates
Toshiba manager Sascha Lange comments on the IFA trend as follows: "We are not only smart, but also clever". He explains that new Toshiba TVs not only offer online entertainment, but also help their owner with technical problems: they enable online remote diagnostics through the Toshiba service. This is made possible by the fact that in the new devices the complete operating software was written on a uniform programming platform. As funny as it sounds: this is not self-evident.
Smart TV applications
The series of smart further developments could be continued. With a program list at Loewe, for example, which no longer differs between TV stations, smart TV and online services, but can be composed individually from all components. With TV sets from Panasonic, whose multituner record one program in parallel, a second display and a recording via network to the iPad stream. Not to mention all the innovations that one or other manufacturer saves for the show itself.
"Content is smart, and not the processor that delivers it" - this is once again the message of the IFA. Here the fair could offer a few exciting topics, such as a preview of future UHD media, video-on-demand services or smart TV applications.
