Teufel has been a pioneer in the field of broadcasting since the beginning of the home cinema era. Lucasfilm also fulfills the requirements of Lucasfilm in the form of a THX licensing with many sets of their portfolio.
BI, DI or monopoly
The system 10 THX Ultra 2 is Devil's new flagship. Three 24-liter front boxes, two full-range dipole speakers and a refrigerator of large and no less than 85 kilograms of subwoofers belong to the customer when he places 8,000 euros on the table. But it's even easier: you can send the set home straight away, and you can listen to eight weeks of a sample, and the manufacturer can do it right away.
Just like in the cinema
But not only the mass, but rather the class impressed. Typical for the system series are the specially developed flat-diaphragm chassis in the three identical front boxes. Two advantages: the better linearity of the transmission function and the good radiation response thanks to the plane baffle.
Conclusion
As a tweeter, the Berlin engineers use a tissue dome, which has a good resonance behavior. Pronounced resonances at the upper transmission end are alien to this membrane material.
The S 1000 FCR is designed as a three-way box: two 20-centimeter woofers work up to 400 hertz, a twelve-centimeter mid-range driver, and above 2,200 hertz the tweeter. The vertical arrangement of the mid / high tone unit ensures a uniform horizontal radiation response so that the viewer's side-seated spectators can also enjoy the good sound.
For a safe stand, there are M6 threads on the bottom, which means that the boxes can be mounted on tripods or at corresponding angles on the wall. A high-gloss black finish gives the set an elegant look.
As the rear speakers for classic home theater sound, dipole loudspeakers are the best choice. The S 1000 D has a special feature: the customer can choose between di-, bi- and monopoles by means of switches at the rear of the housing.
This means that for the typical Kinoklang one chooses the diffuse radiation via dipole, for the pure music performances in the 5.1 format rather the directed bipolar radiation, and if the box is mounted close to the back wall, the monopolar radiation is preferable to the front.
In order to be able to adjust these characteristics, two identical sound centers are required in one housing. The S 1000 D has therefore been equipped with two 13-way woofers, two 13-mid-range drivers and two fabric dents: one set radiates into the rear space and the other forward.
Depending on the switch position, the units can be controlled in the opposite phase or in the same phase, ie with a dipole or bipolar character. The switch position "Monopoly" only displays a sound line.
The subwoofer S 10000 SW with 240 liters Bruttovolumen impresses most strongly. So that you can move the 85 kilogram-weight bass monster, it is designed to be rollable. Two 38-centimeter chassis provide more than enough membrane area to provide powerful pressure even in the lowest frequencies.
An integrated power amplifier with 750 watt nominal power also ensures the necessary thrust. In favor of better impulse response, the developers have renounced a bass reflex tuning and built the subwoofer as a closed version.
On the other hand, the setting and connection field is unspectacular: there is only one frequency controller for the selection of the transition frequency and one line input. The remaining setting options such as "Level", "Phase", "THX Preset" and "Mute" can be easily set up via remote control
When setting up, it is advisable to place the front boxes as far as possible on the ear level and the dipolar radiators on the side of the viewer row. The giant subwoofer is set up as far as possible in the front area. If it is not possible to set a balanced bass range despite the parameters "transition frequency", "phase" and "level", you can also experiment with the position of the S 10000 SW.
The aim should be to control the bass without conspicuous elevations, and, above all, to change the transition to the satellites by 80 hertz without a break.
Thus set up and set, the home cinema experience is guaranteed to be a spectacle. Even in the stereo mode when Joy Denalane sings, what the system 10 can do is what is going on. The recording "Mamani live" is peppered with rich electric bass passages and convinces especially with a remarkable live impression. From the bass to the root, the set has always been contoured.
Nevertheless, one could sense the powerful potential. Electric guitar and electric bass at "With you" have foundations, and the sliding of the fingers on the strings was good to hear. Class, how well the live character with the system 10 is transported into the listening room. Joy Denalane's voice sounds present and fresh, revealing every detail.
To put the subwoofer on the tooth, we put Peter Weniger's "half-live" in the CD player. This recording holds an immensely rich electric bass, which mainly explores the qualities of the bass and upper bass in frontier situations. Unimpressed, the S 10000 SW pushed the basswaves into the listening room, as if this disc was light food. The saxophone had the necessary lard, and the percussions also worked precisely and clearly.
But only the home cinema session showed the tremendous potential of the Devil Set System 10 THX Ultra 2. The devil's boxing with the earthquake-world-drama drama "2012" could prove the dynamic abilities.
In the test, the spectacle went right under the skin: when houses fall into gaps and many vehicles are on collision, the audiences leave an impressionable and lasting impression on the audience thanks to authentic audiovisual - and that is quite in the sense of the filmmakers Br>
THX is a reliable quality label, originally developed for the cinema. The background: George Lucas wanted to make sure that his "Star Wars" films in any cinema sound like his sound engineers had mixed them. For the sound was and is an integral part of the cinematic concept. Not only the picture must inspire, the sound must also go under the skin.
For this, criteria were developed, which a loudspeaker had to fulfill. This was the only way to ensure that a film sounded the same in every THX-licensed cinema. At the latest since the introduction of the DVD and 5.1 digital sound, these criteria also apply in the domestic living room.
Each loudspeaker, which now bears the THX-seal, was sold at THX Ltd. On her (t) z and kidneys. It must fulfill certain radiation criteria, reach a specified maximum level and transmit sounds in a minimum bandwidth. After the test run, the loudspeaker receives one of the coveted THX certificates, depending on the potential.
While the Select variant is sufficient for small to medium sized homes, it should be the Ultra-2 license for really big home cinema. Thus, even home cinemas with a floor space of 150 square meters can be marketed under sound pressure.
The most important requirement of Lucasfilm for the licensing is the identical sound in the front area, in order to keep the tonality between the left, the center and the right constant. This is the only way to ensure that the sound stays the same and does not detract from the picture.
For the ultimate goal is to blend image and sound into a whole. The sound effects should not be perceived as an independent tool, they are only intended to make the viewer more involved in the film.
Dipole emitters are used for the back room. This type of transducer has been used for the rear room sound in the home cinema since it does not directly sound the listener directly, but indirectly.
This means that the dipoles radiate predominantly forward and backwards, but not directly in the direction of the listening position - the loudspeaker "disappears" as a sound-origin. This results in a cinema-like sound reinforcement for the rear area. In the cinema, many loudspeakers on the back wall and the side walls provide for a diffuse, non-localizable backdrop.
The level strength above all in the bass sector is among the best what we have had in the listening room so far. Even the system 8 THX Ultra 2 knew in the relationship more than convincing. Nominally, the "small" Subwoofer S 8000 SW dominates almost the same maximum level, but it does not quite reach the power of the powerful S 10000 SW.
While the set plays first-class in the film business, the direct open playing style may not appeal to every music lover. But anyone who has a home cinema room and is looking for a sound that is hardly inferior to that of the original cinema, is best served with Devil's System 10 THX Ultra 2.
