Until now, electronic devices could only be used in the aircraft in flight mode. The radio waves of mobile phones would interfere with the electronic electronics, so it was said. Now the EASA has lifted the ban on the use of mobile and internet connections for flights within Europe. This is theoretically the way free for telephoning and surfing in the aircraft.
The last word, however, is the airlines. Before releasing the hand-held, they must first check their aircraft for certain safety standards. It may be that individual airlines on all flights, or on flights with certain types of aircraft, continue to prohibit the use of smartphones. Particularly in the case of older types of aircraft, it may be the case that the borland electronics react more sensitively and does not correspond to the safety requirements for mobile radio use. In any case, the passengers must comply with the instructions of the flight crew.
Free WLAN at the airport
Lufthansa has announced that it wants to enable its customers as soon as possible to use mobile Internet on board. The technology of modern aircraft is interference-free and the verification of the safety standards is no hindrance. But telephoning is forbidden. According to Lufthansa, this is not the case for technical reasons, but corresponds to the wishes of the customer.
Already last year, EASA had released the use of electronic devices in flight mode during the take-off and landing phase. The new directive now allows for even more extensive use of the equipment during the flight. Similar plans are also known by the US aviation authorities.
