The five best flat screens in the test

Starting at around € 190, you’ll get a decent display for your computer measuring 23 inches in diagonal. From this size, you can read fonts well, but this is displayed at the usual full-HD resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels large enough.

Of course, in our test, the picture quality plays the most important role. Good contrasts, crisp colors, short response times and stable viewing angles are the decisive factors here. The particularly favorable and fast response, but hardly angle-stable and little color-sensitive TN panels can not be found in any of the test participants. Instead, the manufacturers rely on the superior VA or IPS panels. Their former weakness, long reaction times, they have now under control.

Place 1: Dell UltraSharp U2412M (test: 89 points)

Guide: The TV as a PC monitor

Place 2: EIZO Foris FS2331 (test: 88 points)

The fact that it is worth to spend 200 euros and more even in times of 100 euro displays is quickly determined by comparing the quality of the devices. With low-cost displays, standstill is anything but a matter of course, but with our test participants the rule. In addition, the height adjustability, which counteracts neck pain and is almost always present. Other features, such as built-in speakers, USB hubs, VESA brackets, or LED backlighting, are model dependent.

Rank 3: Asus PA238Q (test: 88 points)

Review: Dell UltraSharp U2412M

The Dell UltraSharp U2412M measures 24 inches in the diagonal and is resolved with 1920 * 1200 pixels in 16: 10 format. You can adjust it in height, tilt it and also swing thanks to the rotating foot. There is also a pivot function that allows the display to rotate 90 °.

With DVI, DisplayPort and VGA the Dell is almost completely equipped - HDMI mis indication. At the picture quality there is nothing to criticize thanks to the IPS panel and LED background lighting. The illumination is uniform.

Test report: EIZO Foris FS2331

With the 23-inch Foris FS2331, display specialist EIZO provides a high-quality display based on a PVA panel. It offers excellent picture quality and is suitable for PC display and TV replacement thanks to integrated loudspeakers, two HDMI connections and the included remote control as a PC display and TV replacement

As the only device in the test, the Eizo is missing the height adjustment and the swiveling foot. If these functions are important, the display must be connected to a support arm from the accessory store using the VESA-compliant mount.

Test report: Asus PA238Q

The 23-inch Asus PA238Q offers particularly extensive adjustment possibilities. For example, you can set the color temperature to different Kelvin values and adjust the Overdrive function called "TraceFree" in six different levels. Thanks to its integrated picture-in-picture function, Asus displays images from up to two sources at the same time - useful to keep a second PC in view or to watch a football match.

Despite its IPS panel (1,920 x 1080 pixels), the Asus PA238Q achieves a good response time of an average of 20.2 ms. It is also suitable for occasional players and movie fans. The image quality is good, the brightness distribution is the best in the test field.

Rank 4: Dell UltraSharp U2312HM (test: 87 points)

Review: Dell UltraSharp U2312HM

The image is bright and contrast-rich, but the illumination is much more uneven than in the Asus display, for example. The response time is 22.6 ms. An HDMI input is missing, DVI, DisplayPort and VGA are present.

Place 5: Samsung SyncMaster S24A650D (test: 86 points)

Loudspeaker, Dell has no integrated. The so-called "Dell Soundbar" is available as an accessory. It provides 2 * 5W, is attached to the bottom edge of the display and costs about 36 euros.

The Samsung SyncMaster S24A650D is recommended with its height-adjustable base, its matt black and therefore non-reflective housing and its especially contrast-rich display for use in the office. Because of the slow response time of 27.4 ms, it is less suitable for players.

Thanks to LED background lighting, the power consumption drops to just under 32 W. It is further reduced by means of motion and brightness sensors, which automatically dimming or switching off the device. HDMI input and loudspeakers are missing the approximately 255 Euro expensive Samsung display. In addition, it is the only device in the test to miss any USB ports.

Conclusion

The Dell UltraSharp U2412M is the perfect all-rounder for office and home, which does a lot of things right and does not cause any significant weaknesses. A touch more affordable is the more flexible Asus display, which lends itself with the picture-in-picture function. The Dell UltraSharp U2312HM is a decent device and our price. The slightly higher price of the EIZO display is relative to its image quality and its suitability as a replacement for a TV set. The Samsung display drops slightly, but knows the low power consumption and its absolute office-suitability on its side.
