Dual Boot: Windows 8 & Windows 7 installed parallel to a hard drive

Windows 8 test, but keep Windows 7 for security – this works with a dual boot installation. You set up Windows 7 and Windows 8 on a hard disk. We guide you step by step in this guide. Just take a look at the picture gallery in this article, which explains all the steps for you.

An upgrade is not always the best solution, with Windows 8 installed over the existing Windows 7. In many cases one would like to try Windows 8 first - and if not, Windows 7 further use. Or you use an old program that you know is no longer running under Windows 8.

With a so-called dual boot solution, you install Windows 7 and Windows 8 in parallel on one hard drive. When you start your computer, you have the choice of which operating system you would like to work with. So you can install Windows 8 without risking your existing Windows 7. Important: First create a Windows 7 backup containing all the data stored on your hard drive! The just-linked guide will tell you what data you should back up, and how it works most.

The basic requirement for the dual boot solution is a hard drive with Windows 7 installed on it and sufficient free space for Windows 8 as well as the programs you want to use there. At least 20 gigabytes should be in our experience. You will also need an installation medium (DVD or USB key) for Windows 8 and a license key.
