If you use an AV receiver with your own DAC as output device for the PC sound, you can skip the DAC of the onboard chip. In the playback settings under System control / Sound, you only have to select the digital output as the default device. Then a digital cable from the onboard sound output of the mainboard with appropriate support – the signal is simply through the computer and sanded to the amplifier. Interference signals are not usually present in digital transmission on the computer side. Music and videos from digital media libraries or from DVD and Blu-ray can be enjoyed without problems with multi-channel sound. There is a disadvantage, however, in frequent cases when playing.
Games in digital 5.1
As a rule, PC games do not output digital 5.1 sound that an AV amplifier understands. In many cases, only stereo or no sound is heard. More modern systems and games can also output multi-channel digital audio via the HDMI output of the graphics card. However, it is not always ensured that 6 (5.1) or 8 (7.1) channels are played correctly.
A solution is offered by high-quality sound cards such as those mentioned by Asus or Creative. The key features are called Dolby Digital Live or DTS Connect. These technologies are used to encode multichannel audio from PC games or other dynamic content in real time into a signal that the AV receiver understands, decodes, and outputs properly in 5.1 or 7.1. For all sound cards that support the feature, you will find the setting in the driver program. High-quality mainboards can offer the same functions. The settings can be found in the manufacturer's driver or in the Windows settings. As a rule, you will find it in the system control under Sound. In the Play tab, click the properties of the Soundchip (Digital), navigate to the Advanced tab, and then select the correct default format.
On the next page we come to the conclusion.
