With 120 x 89 x 102 mm the Pentax XG1 is not big for a bridge camera. It still weighs 570 grams. This makes it very good to hold, a well-shaped handle on the right camera side makes it possible. Other parts of the camera surface are similarly “rubberized” as the handle.
All buttons, except for the sunken video button, protrude slightly from the camera surface. So they are still to be operated with the fingertip. Contact stroke and pressure points of the keys are good, the marking of all operating elements is clear. The good-locking mode dial on the camera top shows what the camera has to offer. There are automatic program times, automatic, manual, automatic, own setting and four other modes.
Depending on the setting on the mode dial, a menu is displayed, which is displayed on the push button. At the last menu item, there is a cross-connection to further system settings. The entire menu structure is simple and manageable, the number of possible settings will hardly confuse anyone. Image sequence, ISO and exposure compensation have their own buttons for direct access.
The 3-inch display has 153,333 RGB pixels, which is OK and the reasonable price of the camera is appropriate. Playback on the monitor is fine, but when the monitor is tilted, the color and brightness of the display change. Then the built-in viewfinder is a help. It has only 66.666 pixels and is therefore not synonymous sharp, but the text and symbols are still visible. The viewfinder does not have a diopter compensation, which reduces the usability of the defect.
A range of focal lengths of 24 to 1248 mm (KB) is, of course, beyond doubt. The light intensity starts at 2.8 and is at 1248 mmm still at a good 5.6. A well-functioning image stabilizer or the classic tripod (plus the classic tripod) are indispensable for such extremely long bags. If Flash is activated in the menu, the flash will automatically jump out of the box. There is no separate control element for the flash release. Five flash options are available, after use, the flash is parked by hand in the case.
The picture quality offers what you expect from a small (1 / 2.3 inch) 16 MP sensor: Hausmannskost. The vote is rather low contrast, which gives the pictures an airy and slightly soft impression. Much better than too crisp. In contrast, we find the message "speed when it matters" on the website. 0.29s in the wide angle are quite respectable, but 2.48s in the tele are also not to be excused by the large focal range - at best explain.
Conclusion: A favorable bridge camera with 52-fold focal range. If you are looking for a camera for money, you will find it here.
