By default, the privacy settings allow Whatsapp to allow all users to see the profile, status, and when a user was last online. To change these settings, go to Settings in Account / Privacy. There you can set the setting for the time stamp last online, the profile picture and the status separately. Categories are Everyone, My Contacts and Nobody.
