Windows 8 or Windows 7: Decision support by the expert

Windows 8 or Windows 7? Also in the editorial team, the opinions on the new Windows are split, especially when it comes to desktop PCs and devices without touchscreen. Some colleagues find Windows 8 basically ugly and impractical, they want to stay with Windows 7 as long as possible. They also do not suffice the changes under the hood to justify a changeover. Others, including myself, have arranged themselves with the double personality of Windows 8. I find the new start screen and even some of the Windows 8 apps even very practical, especially on the notebook.

Gesture detection against mouse control

The touchpads on notebooks also make it easier to handle Windows 8 by using gesture recognition, such as zooming with two fingers or the wiping gestures from the left and right edges of the touchpad, which allow you to quickly switch between apps or access the Charms menu. For the last two gestures one does not even need a newer notebooks, which work with current drivers even on old devices like my six-year-old Fujitsu Lifebook T.

In addition to this, Windows 8 still has some small but fine improvements, such as the faster system start, especially with new hardware with UEFI, faster connection to WLAN hotspots, the new file explorer with ribbons or the new copy function with better support for copying multiple files .

Fast system startup with Windows 8

Windows8 requires approximately half the time of Windows 7 for the time between the start of the computer to the usable Windows desktop. The fast start function of Windows 8 is responsible for this. The Hiberfile file has long been known from the Windows hibernation state. Windows 8 uses this file to start up faster. Because when the Quick Start option is active in the power switch settings of the power options, the Windows kernel is saved in this file when the Windows kernel is shut down, but not the rest of the user session as in the rest state. Therefore, the hiberfile.sys file remains small and can be loaded faster than the individual components of the Windows kernel when it is fully rebooted. In the case of multi-boot systems, however, you should disable the quick start. This is because when a different operating system is started via the Windows 8 boot manager, the stored kernel state is first cleared and then the other system is started. Also a subsequent Windows 8 start takes longer, because the kernel has to be restarted.

But it is optimal to simply use the energy-saving mode - even with Windows 7. In this S3 standby mode, only the main memory of the computer is supplied with energy, the complete system state before the standby is maintained. So the operating system not only starts extremely fast, it does not have to be loaded from HDD or SSD, but you can work right where you stopped before the standby. Since the information stored in the RAM does not survive a power failure, hybrid standby should always be activated in the power settings of the computer. Then the system will be saved on standby parallel on disk and loaded from there if necessary.

However, if you work primarily on the Windows desktop, you can upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8. Because here, the new Windows version has even lost some functions, such as the transparency effects in Aero or the Sidebar. The technical improvements of Windows 8 do not justify a costly and time-consuming change. Anyone who wants to upgrade his system with new hardware anyway, and wants to switch to Windows 8, should definitely think about a mouse with touch detection or a touchpad at the same time. Apart from that, you can simply retrofit the usual start menu on desktop PCs, there are now a whole range of programs that take over.

Metro apps are great on tablets, convertibles and also notebooks, but on big desktop monitors they look a bit odd. With the Shareware Modern Mix from Stardock, you can also easily plug Metro apps into windows and use them as traditional Windows programs on the desktop.

Exciting for desktop PCs is Windows 8 mainly through the storage spaces (Storage Spaces). A storage space can be defined much larger than the physically existing one from the start. If this becomes closer to its capacity limit, then additional panels are added, and different interfaces are possible. The distribution of the data is supported by Windows 8 itself. Two disks can also be used to create mirrored storage, and for three or more drives, a 3-fold mirroring or a parity storage similar to RAID 5 is possible. It is also possible to create different storage spaces over several disks, which then appear as normal drives in Windows Explorer.

Tip to the end: While the upgrade gives the option not only of the data, but also the programs to take over, but I advise to a new installation. This is how you can get rid of the many small tools and system utilities that you have installed over the years and do not usually need them.
