Which backup tool is the better? We make the test.
Operation
Windows has several backup tools that can be used to back up files and even create complete system im- ages. However, some important functions such as compression and encryption are missing. As an alternative, Acronis True Image 2017 and O & O DiskImage 11 Professional are available.
Backup
True Image has adopted the menu design of Windows 10 almost 1: 1. This is at first something to the sake of clarity, because the program icons of True Image are not immediately self-explanatory. However, if one has grown accustomed to the presentation, everything else runs smoothly. DiskImage is more easy to use, because in the standard view all menu entries are clearly defined. If you are already familiar with the program, you can switch to the Express view, which displays only the menu icons in a mini-window.
Restore
True Image and DiskImage control users through all backup tasks and perform their tasks quickly and reliably. Still, True Image leaves the overall impression better. Parallel to the backup, the software automatically creates a schedule that performs an incremental backup on a daily basis (for files and folders) or weekly (for partitions and complete drives). This makes any further configuration by the user virtually unnecessary. With DiskImage you have to trigger the planner manually, which is less comfortable and can also be forgotten. In the case of drive or file backup, you have access to all backup parameters instantly via Options and Advanced.
Performance
DiskImage offers only a handful of options in the Backup Wizard. For this, it works with profiles, where you can specify the backup options for drive and file operations. For a backup the currently selected profile is used, so it is very easy to perform various types of backups quickly. True Image recognizes only one backup configuration for each backup job, the parameters of which must be adjusted first.
At the core task, creating and restoring backups, True Image and DiskImage are equal. You create backups of complete drives, individual partitions, as well as files and folders. It is also possible to back up the Windows partition while it is running, as well as cloning the entire drive. True Image and DiskImage match the partition size of the target disk, relative to the original drive, making it bootable. Backups, optionally, set the programs completely, incrementally, or differentially.
On request they are encrypted, compressed and checked for integrity. True Image and DiskImage also back up drives using an unknown file system, as is the case with encrypted partitions. In addition to internal and external data carriers, storage locations for the backups are also network directories and FTP servers, while the disk image additionally supports the encrypted variant SFTP; Certain file types can be excluded from the backup and split the backup into multiple backup files to burn them to DVD.
In the subscription versions of TrueImage, the local backup methods also include cloud backups. Acronis provides online storage for its servers, depending on the tariff between 50 GB and 5 TB. Before they end up in the manufacturer's data cloud, True Image encrypts the backups locally, if desired. For more data security, you can also select the server location that is pre-configured to the United States.
Also, when restoring, the True Image and Disk Image wizards guide the user confidently through all program steps. For the emergency, a rescue environment can be created on Windows PEBase, which then starts from DVD or USBStick. The best thing about the game is the fact that you have a hardware-independent recovery.
True Image creates backups in the duel, much faster than DiskImage. The task in the test is an everyday case: backing up the 48 GB SSD system partition, a second SSD in the standard configuration (on HDD disks takes longer, creating much longer). True Image did this in a fast 1: 40 minute. DiskImage took almost twice as much time with 3:12 minutes and was even slower than the Windows backup (2: 45 minutes). In image size comparison, True Image also gains 17.4 GB to 19.5 GB (24.8 GB).
True, Image, and DiskImage provide interesting special features .; True Image includes the backup of smartphones and tablets. This works with both Android and iOS devices. If the PC and the mobile are in the same WLAN, the data can be conveniently transferred to the computer by radio link. In the subscription model, there is even a Facebook backup to save posted photos and videos. The special features include the Try & Decide mode, which allows users to make changes to the system without hesitation and later, decide whether to accept or reject the changes. DiskImage, also supports the VHDX format and can write backups to virtual disks. These can then be used in virtualization tools such as Virtual Box or VMware Player. Both programs can include their backups as virtual drives in Windows Explorer, which allows you to extract individual files or browse the content.
Acronis True Image 2017 wins the duel against O & O DiskImage 11 Professional Edition. The two recommended tools are on the same level as backup and restore functions. Only with the performance, True Image can clear itself with the much faster times, from DiskImage.
