Target Exploration (Tarex): National Security Agency (NSA) employees have been targeted to sabotage networks and devices for the purposes of the US secret services. The Tarex program affected IT companies in the United States as well as China and South Korea. This is reported by The Intercept and is based on Edward Snowden’s documentation.
More about security
Since May, it is already known that the NSA has intervened in the supply chain at US companies and installed rear doors in the hardware sent from there without the manufacturer's knowledge. What is new, however, is that the NSA has also carried out similar actions with foreign companies.
According to the documents, the personnel assigned to Tarex were among the US embassies in the respective countries. In addition, NSA had its own employees in technology companies leaked. They had the task of secretly procuring the information which a company does not want to publish voluntarily. However, the scope of the actions is still unclear.
According to the report, Tarex has been around for decades and is one of the "core secrets" of NSA. According to a diagram from 2004, the details of the program are currently only accessible to a few people outside the USA. According to this, the NSA fears that the details could jeopardize the US's relationship with foreign governments, and could also limit the possibilities of cyberspiring intelligence.
