The new-generation TVs often have the supplementary title “Smart TVs” and have a network access as well as a connection for external storage. There, the TVs read the stored film, photo or music files and reproduce them. However, in most of the living rooms there are televisions that do not have these functions yet. However, an expensive new TV purchase is not currently under discussion.
Powerline adapter and network storage
A network-compatible media player - like the WD TV Live Hub shown here - costs considerably less than a Smart TV. It plays photo, music, and movie files, including online content such as YouTube, and outputs it on the TV, whether the files are connected to the player via USB or on the network.
Remote access with WD 2go
The WD TV Live Hub is a full HD-capable media player with network connection and special additional features. The device plays the popular video, photo and audio formats either from the network or from directly connected USB memory. The footage may have a resolution of up to 1,920 x 1,080 pixels (Full HD).
The internal hard disk with 1 TB serves as a further data source. Data is copied from a USB memory or via the LAN port to the internal memory. The Live Hub provides access to various online video portals: the list includes YouTube, Dailymotion, or Flingo for movies. The music portals like Live365, SHOUTcast or TuneIn Radio are available for audio fans on board. Picasa, Facebook and Twitter online services can be viewed directly from the player and displayed on the TV.
If no network connection is possible via cable or WLAN, the connection from the media player to the router is assisted by the socket. The WD Livewire powerline adapter connects up to four devices via the power supply to the router and extends the LAN connections of the router by a further three. Unlike traditional Powerline adapters, each with only one LAN port, each of the two Livewire adapters have four LAN ports.
Western Digital's My Book Live is a book-sized network store. It also fits into the living room due to its design. The device is easy to set up and offers a user interface with excellent online help, which makes it easy for home users to get started.
Additional releases or users are created very quickly and uncomplicated. The included software helps with backups of computers in the home network on the My Book Live. This is the complete protection of a whole partition from the computer.
Especially successful in the My Book Live is the remote access called "WD 2go". This makes it possible to access the NAS in the home network from any computer on the Internet and even via a smartphone.
The WD My Book is very easy to unblock the remote access with the online service "WD 2go". This requires a one-time registration in the My Book Live interface for remote access. The user then receives a password-protected access to the data store in the home network via each browser. This also works by smartphone app. After installing the app and replacing a key, the user accesses the network hard drive from the phone.
