Skype wants to offer future 3D - Videotelefonie

Mark Gillet, Vice President of Skype and Microsoft confirmed in an interview with the BBC that the VoIP service Skype plans to allow the users in the distant future three-dimensional video calls. According to Gillet, the project has already been carried out in laboratories. 3D screens and 3D recordings have also made significant progress in the last few years due to rising demand, which also benefits the development of 3D video telephony.

For a 3D recording, you need several cameras, which are at precisely calibrated angles to each other, so the Microsoft manager. The US technology company would have the necessary know-how to implement such three-dimensional video recordings, but technical means for mass-effective implementation would be lacking. Therefore, the introduction according to Mark Gillet will still delay "many years."

In addition, the Vice President expressed concern that video calls in the field of use for 3D would be a low priority for the time being: "3D will be much more on TV, computers and, ultimately, also smartphones before it ever enters the videotelefonie."

Added to this is the fact that in the United States and Great Britain there were only last attempts with 3D television, the British BBC had to adjust their offer but because of too small demand. Disney's US-based ESPN recently released a cable offer for the time being. Only "if and as soon as 3D actually stands out" will be reactivated.
