Samsung WB800F in the test

Size and weight of the Samsung WB800F lie in the mid-range of compact cameras (111 x 65 x 36 mm, about 220 grams), of the focal length it plays in the upper class. There are, in the meantime, many models that offer even more telephoto, but 23 millimeters in the wide angle are a word – and in practice, more than a lot of telemillimeters.

Full program: automatic time, automatic shutter, manual settings

The right side of the Samsung WB800F is similar to the handle and can be enclosed relatively well with the fingers despite the flat shape. The surface of the digital camera is provided with a very delicate structure, which in our opinion could be somewhat more pronounced.

Fingertip feeling: touch screen operation

The buttons are flush with the camera surface to prevent accidental actuation or only slightly protrude beyond. The main dial is also sunk into the camera surface. This results in a pleasant, pleasing design and all controls are clearly marked. The only criticism here: The setting wheel of the Samsung WB800F could snap a little more clearly. There is, however, the risk that it will be unwantedly altered.

Communicative: Wireless connection to smartphone

The main setting wheel does not directly indicate what the digital camera is all about. The manual functions are hidden behind the common designation ASM. What is recognizable with other cameras by the position of the setting wheel, the Samsung WB800F is displayed elegantly on the display. So even if it is not immediately recognizable: The camera offers the complete bouquet of settings including time control, automatic shutter and completely manual operation.

Image quality

The Fn button on the back provides a graphical overview of all relevant settings on the display. Depending on the preselected mode, these menu items can be accessed and changed immediately. The main menu of the Samsung WB800F offers many settings, but remains comprehensible and clear.

The display of the Samsung WB800F with a size of 3 inches has a resolution of 153,000 RGB pixels. The picture is sharp, the colors strong, font and symbols are easy to recognize. The special feature of this display, however, is its touch function. All settings made by buttons can also be used on the display.

This is much faster than having to go through certain menu items. Optionally, the camera can be programmed to focus on the touch point or to trigger it. The Samsung WB800F is certainly not the first camera with touch-screen, but one of the first, in which the function also works reliably.

The focal length of the Samsung WB800F begins as already mentioned at 23 mm and reaches up to 483 mm (KB, 21x optical zoom), the light intensity ranges from 2.8 to 5.9, also these are acceptable values. Despite the available image stabilizer, a tripod can be helpful in some pictures. Since it is good that the tripod thread bush is arranged in the housing center. This provides plenty of support surface and allows robust attachment to the tripod. An optical image stabilizer is of course also on board with this focal range.

The built-in flash of the Samsung WB800F comes only on demand by button from the housing. In the extended position the support of the small flash head is anything but stable. Caution is advised. The recommendation is, immediately after use, back into the crate with it. Otherwise the well-shaped camera is well processed.

How to find the right digital camera

The cover for the plug connections is made of solid plastic and closes correctly. In our test model, the latch for the memory card was very bitchy. The card was not held in the lowest slot position - the last click holding the memory card in the slot was not always reliable. The solution was to press them with the lid in position and to lock them quickly. That should go better. We positively note the WLAN module for communicating with the smartphone. Samsung also markets the WB800F as a "smart camera."

With 16 megapixels on a 1 / 2.3 inch sensor, the Samsung WB800F provides mainstream. And so the pictures look like: There are no praise for the performance, but also no evil outliers down. The mid-resolution with 1.379 LP / BH in the wide angle at ISO 100 is not in the top class and goes back at every sensitivity level significantly, but Samsung holds the edge waste with 300-400 line pairs still within just acceptable limits

Overall, the images are rather softly matched, faces benefit more than motifs with many edges and structures. From ISO 400 onwards, the quality already decreases significantly.

Test Conclusion

Buying advice: The best compact cameras up to 200 euros

For a price of around 270 euros Samsung provides with the WB800F a camera with solid processing, top equipment and acceptable picture quality at ISO 100.
