Grundig 55VLX8582: The UHD-TV in the test.
Unexpected pleasures
Classic television is just as important to the manufacturer Grundig as the integration of new media. With a new chipset Grundig's TV superclass is rounded up. Now, not only is good compatibility with the highest Ultra-HD image rates, but the Vision 8 is also very powerful in terms of equipment and operation.
Conclusion
Especially for the first part one likes to respond quickly and quickly to input from trade and consumers. The developers are not quite as far away as other manufacturers, and here is the United States's core target group and not Nebenschauplatz. The new Vision 8 is more than product management. Compared with the nominally 100 Euro more expensive model VLX7070, which we presented in issue 4/2015 on the 70th anniversary of Grundig, little has been done on appearance, that is, the clean workmanship, but now inner values created by other manufacturers were created With up to 500 euros extra charge.
We speak mainly of the second tuner branch, which makes the recording function much more luxurious or picture-in-picture possible. On the hardwareside, the decoders for the compression standards HEVC (H.265) and VP9 were installed, which can now be used to receive the current Ultra-HD transmitters. In addition, Grundig promises compatibility with the upcoming DVB-T2 HD standard, in which terrestrial HDTV will be broadcasted from the coming year. The new decoder will enable video-on-demand streaming from Netflix to Ultra-HD, which can be accessed as usual with a dedicated button on the remote.
Youtube uses the licensing-free Codec VP9, and the app is easy to play with our Ultra HD clips. In addition, all our 4K test pictures and films, packaged in data streams, are now also available via USB. It was too early for HDR. For external devices, all four HDMI sockets are fully UHD-capable - of course including copy protection for the upcoming Ultra-HD Blu-ray. If you consider that this is all the more expensive predecessor still missing, the new 55VLX8582 is a real bargain.
What really matters with TV sets, the opinions are far apart. Number one of the reasons for a new purchase is improved image quality. What, however, if other small things thoroughly spoil the TV fun? A very good example of this we had before some issues, as the sender list of an Asian TV was not at all sorted. Normal zapping became a torment. Here, you have to give Grundig a very big compliment, because the transmitter installation is absolutely exemplary. Not only does the new QuadCore processor react smoothly and the logo pages scroll quickly, multiple stations can be selected and moved together - even to a position entered via the number field.
This is the only way to speed up sorting with more than 1,000 satellite senders. The assignment to favorite lists is also a clack, and of course the latter are also used for the clear program guide, which refers to its many additional data from the Rovi metadata service from the Internet (also via W-LAN). The icing on the cake in the TV tuner is the support of the one-cable solution for satellite reception - a good way to get two signal paths to the TV without having to lay two cables. Even an update for Sat-> IP should be available soon. As far as classic TV aspects are concerned, Grundig has also made his homework and delivers a very high-quality package.
After the very positive initial assessment and installation, we were eager to see how the Vision 8 would be in the laboratory. It is based on a VA panel, which offers a good contrast, but as usual limited viewing angles. Worthy of praise, because in the price class is quite unusual, is that 3D shutter glasses are enclosed and the full sharpness in the third dimension is delivered. In the default "Movie", the most standard color is provided, which can not be further optimized. Care should be taken to avoid contrasts, because if the values are too high, the white point shifts.
Thanks to the gamma setting and neatly balanced color space, the overall impression is very good, even the smoothest motion as the highest challenge can convince. The picture is clear and clean. However, if you look more closely, you can see that our test pattern from the pre-production is still clearly clear and too clean. Not only with bad tuner signals, but also with HDMI sources and USB media is massively noisy and smoothed. Everything is flat and unnatural. In addition, the processing of the color channels has frequency deficiencies.
At an appointment with a product manager and quality assurance, Grundig confirmed that he was working with the Kelvin chip developer for the final series production to work on a solution. However, most retailers and customers would prefer a clean, brilliant image. We prefer to be natural and fair, especially with excellent sources. If Grundig is at least slightly repressing the feature film mode, this TV is really fun in all aspects.
Processing, operation and equipment are top for the price class. And with a little more sensitivity in the picture, the Grundig Vision 8 is a real insider's tip.
