Liberkey Instructions: Create USB stick with portable apps

Why is Liberkey so practical? Portable apps have many handy advantages in everyday computing: they do not require any installation and take up little space. Therefore, they fit comfortably on a USB stick and deserve the praise “particularly valuable” in numerous application scenarios.

Three Liberkey versions: Basic, Standard, Ultimate

Whether it's a rescue stick with a system, file and security tool, a mobile office with an extensive office suite, a text editor, a PDFReader and a creator, or a media stick with players for audio and video files - with the German-language freeware Liberkey You always have the right programs under Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1 at the start and take for example with the Schlüsselbund. This is how you work with the same familiar programs on any PC or notebook and even take your data with you.

Explore the Liberkey Interface

The developers of the Liberkey software offer their free program collection in three versions, which differ only in the scope of the contained applications: Liberkey Basic, Liberkey Standard and Liberkey Ultimate. For the basic version with 14 applications, you need about 295 MB of free space on the USB stick. The standard suite of 85 programs takes up around 900 MB of storage space. The Ultimate Suite requires around 1.2 GB of space for 152 programs.

Liberkey: Customize the settings

When installing Liberkey, select the required version from the upper window and select the programs you want to exclude. By default, all programs that are included in the respective Liberkey version are installed. You can easily add more programs as we will show you later in the article.

Liberkey: add additional programs

The Liberkey software including the portable programs can be used without any time limitation or functional limitations. You are not bound to the USB stick with Liberkey. If you install the software and the portable programs on the local hard disk, Liberkey is just as good as a program start. Use the Liberkey icon in the Windows systray to start the individual programs and go to the settings

Start Liberkey via the optional desktop shortcut created by the installation or by double-clicking the LiberKey.exe file in Windows Explorer. You can recognize that the Liberkey starter is active on the red-green circular symbol in the Windows systray. You can open and close the program window in the lower-right corner of the Windows desktop.

The start menu of Liberkey is quite simple: in the left window area all already installed portable applications are listed sorted by categories. A click on the tab with the heart icon shows the programs that were most used. The tab with the clock icon lists the most recently used applications.

By the way, you can switch the view by clicking on the icon in the white window area at the top right. You then change from the tree view to a symbol view, which may be somewhat clearer for some users. The window of the Liberkey starter moves upwards by grabbing the mouse pointer's limit line with the mouse pointer and moving it upwards. This does not work to the left.

To start a portable program, go to the corresponding section such as System and Clean - Uninstall. Then click on a program entry like CCleaner. A window opens with further information on the entry such as version number, manufacturer, license and system requirements, as well as an English-language short description. Clicking the Start button at the bottom of the description starts the program. Use it as usual and quit it if you no longer need it.

Alternatively, right-click on an entry and use the context menu to run a program normally or as an administrator.

If you want to run a program without going through the category trees, use the search input window in the Liberkey starter. Simply enter the name of the application - after the first letters a list with the matching matches will be displayed. Double-click on an entry to start the desired program.

Liberkey has its own area for documents, which can be found in the subdirectory Liberkey, MyDocuments on USB stick or hard drive - depending on the installation. From the corresponding link in the Liberkey starter, open the MyDocuments directory in Windows Explorer.

In the settings of Liberkey, which you can access via the context menu of the Liberkey tools, set the color of the starter. Use one of the eight color schemes or define your own colors. The selected selection is taken over in real time. In the area of the user interface, you determine whether or not you want to use the animation effects when opening the Liberkey starter. In the advanced options, Liberkey can be loaded when Windows starts - ideal for an installation on the hard disk.

You can also set up a temporary link in the Send to menu to transfer files to the USB stick and save them to My Documents.

The Liberkey Tools section hides an interesting option: Assigning files to the portable programs allows you to transfer the control over supported files to, for example, Liberkey media players or image viewers. Then the image viewer of the Liberkey Suite starts when you double-click a JPEG or PNG file in Windows Explorer. If the Liberkey starter is not active, the program registered under Windows is opened for the respective data type.

Liberkey: Load Available Updates

A total of 296 programs are currently available for integration into the Liberkey starter. In addition to the 152 programs in the Ultimate version, there are 144 other programs on the Liberkey website. Here you will find a catalog with the topics audio, CD / DVD, education, file management, graphics / photo, internet, network / server, office, security, systemutilities, video and games. Locate a program and click the Install link on the right side of the details page. In the browser, a pop-up window appears asking for permission for the local installation. Click Start App.

The Liberkey Creator opens and displays the selected program. Press the Install Selected Programs button to continue. The software is loaded, unpacked and then sorted into the relevant category of the Liberkey starter. This is how you complete the Liberkey installation with numerous programs that you need for your application. For example, LibreOffice is not included with Liberkey and can be provided later.

The fundus of programs is considerable, but without overloading. The good thing is that the Liberkey developers generally offer one or two functionally equivalent programs within a category, rather than leaving the user to choose from a few programs.

If you do not use individual programs, then it makes sense to remove them from the starter. To do so, right-click on an entry and select Delete. You can only remove the shortcut in the Liberkey starter or also delete the program from the USB stick or the local hard disk. Make your selection and continue.

Tip: Install portable programs that did not make it into the selection list of Liberkey developers. To do this, copy a program to the USB stick, at best to the directory LiberKey \ MyApps. Then open the Liberkey starter and right-click in the left window area. In the context menu, choose New shortcut, Program / File ..., and bind the desired tool. For a more overview, you can create a new category in the context menu.

The Liberkey installation is also synchronized with the online catalog. Make sure the Liberkey starter is active and go to the liberkey.com website. Click on Your Liberkey in the upper navigation bar. In the bottom section, press Sync my Liberkey with the website. In the following window, confirm by clicking on Start app. After a short wait, a status report will be displayed on the website. It contains information on the version number and the programs installed.

So that you do not carry old programs on the USB stick or boot from the hard drive, Liberkey has a well-made update function. In the Liberkey interface, click the Liberkey Tools button at the bottom right and select Check for Updates from the menu. A new desktop window will now display the portable applications for which an update is available. An override with the mouse pointer on an entry provides some detail information such as download size and space requirement after unpacking. Clicking on the button Update my portable programs will start the update. The programs are loaded, unpacked and integrated into the Liberkey starter.

Tip: In the Liberkey settings you should activate the notification for updates under Liberkey tools. You do not need to search for updates yourself, and you can initiate an update with one click.
