This unique chassis of the British boxing professional went back to the end of the 80’s when KEF once again proved its innovative power.
Another development of this time made the optimum coaxial arrangement of high and low / mid-range speakers possible: the market introduction of the neodymium magnets. The immense energy content of this magnetic material makes it possible to construct the smallest drives which can be accommodated in the magnet design of the low / mid-range driver.
Four stereo compact speakers tested
It was known for a long time that a sound emission is theoretically optimal from one point. However, it was only then possible to mount the tweeter centered, but only because of the large drive. The drawback: The sound developed with the drivers, related to the listening position, time-delayed, and the sound propagation of the tweeter was disturbed by edge reflections. Only the flush mounting of the tweeter in the low / midrange cone brought the decisive step forward.
The highlight of this optimized chassis arrangement: The cone shape of the low / mid-range driver serves as a sound guide for the tweeter. KEF managed to harmonize the bundling of both chassis. This means that there are no abrupt changes in the bundling of the two chassis, but a uniformly increasing directional effect. The result is a first-rate focus of the music event and a tonal balance independent of the listening room characteristics.
Whether walnut, rosewood veneer or high-gloss black or white lacquered, the R 100 boxes make a very noble impression in conjunction with the brushed aluminum chassis bridges.
