EOS-1D X Mark II is the new professional SLR from Canon, which replaces both the EOS-1D X and the video-specialized EOS-1D C. Of course Canon has further improved the picture quality. However, the focus was on speed, autofocus and a 4K video function, in order to combine 1D X and 1D C in one camera. As a price for the housing, Canon cites 6,300 euros; the professional DSLR will appear in trade from May 2017.
Autofocus upgrade
The core of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II is a full-format CMOS sensor with the dual-pixel AF technology known from the EOS 7D Mark II. Thanks to the dual-pixel AF, the EOS 1D X II is also capable of fast and secure shooting in live view mode and video. The resolution of the 1D X II increases slightly to 20.2 megapixels.
Revised video function
A dual "DIGIC 6 +" image processor is responsible for signal processing. Canon promises a better noise behavior with new, more efficient algorithms, and as a result of better noise reduction also a higher dynamic. The sensitivity drives Canon but not so far up as Nikon with the D5. The available sensitivity range is in extended mode from ISO 50 to ISO 409.600
Price and availability
The Phase AF of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II works with 61 measurement fields, 41 of which are cross sensors. They now cover a larger sensor area and all 61 are usable up to light intensity f8 - important when recording with converters or under dull light conditions. The precision of the AF servo has been improved, which is now better to follow the movement changes during motif tracking.

The AF system of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II works with the exposure sensor, which still has a resolution of 360,000 pixels and the computing power of its own Digic-6 processor. Both use the autofocus for motif detection and tracking, especially when the subject leaves the area covered by the AF sensors.
The flickering detection, introduced with the 7D Mark II, is also available. The above-mentioned dual-pixel AF technology can be used in live view and video mode, which can focus on about 80% of the sensor.
A very important point for professional cameras is the serial image speed. With auto-focus tracking, the new Canon EOS-1D X Mark II reaches 14 fps, with the mirror tilted 16 B / s - both in RAW settings.
In the viewfinder, the new 1 series also relies on an optical solution with a 100% field coverage. The 3 inch monitor provides touch function. However, this is largely limited to determining the focus point in Live View and Video.
Compared to the predecessor model, the video functionality has been significantly expanded to meet the professional needs as well. The EOS 1D X II can shoot in real 4K resolution of 4,096 x 2,160 pixels with the maximum frequency of 60 frames / s and store the data in the camera - but only when using CFast memory cards. For full-HD recordings, the maximum frequency increases to 120 fps. Of course, 8.8 MP still images from the 4K material can be exported.
The case is similar to the previous model. It is large and sturdy, sealed against dust and splashing water, and equipped with controls for taking pictures in portrait or landscape format. The handgrip has been somewhat optimized - this is now more angular and offers more space to the fingers.

The more pronounced hump in the middle of the upper side is striking - it is now home to a GPS along with the accessory shoe. This also uses Russian and Japanese satellites for faster and more accurate determination and writes time and location information into the Exif data. In addition, the 1D X II offers a fast USB 3.0, LAN and dual memory card slot for CFast and CF cards. WLAN is only possible via adapter.
From May 2017 the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II will be available at the retail price of 6,300 Euro.
