Four months after the last Aldi PC, the brand new Medion computer was on the shelves of Aldi Süd on March 26th. At first sight, not much has changed, because the housing is identical to the previous model except for a considerable improvement of the flap in front of the card reader. Like the predecessor, the new Aldi-Bolide is only mediocre. The cables were laid with little care, dangling but not loose around. There is hardly space for extensions in the case: a floppy disk drive, a further hard disk, a second memory latch and a PCI card - more does not fit into it. The second free PCI slot is concealed by the graphics card fan and can not be used. However, the computer is so richly equipped that extensions are only necessary for the fewest users. According to Aldi, an ATI Radeon 9600TX is used as an graphics card. This is not a card with Radeon 9600-, but with a factory-side higher clocked 9500 chip). The price has fallen by 20 euros compared to the previous model, while the equipment has been further improved. The main memory was doubled to 512 MB, the hard disk grew from 120 to 160 GB, and a radio remote control allows the control of the DVD player through the domestic walls. The receiver of the remote control is connected to a USB port by cable. If the predecessor still equipped with a 40xCD burner, the successor props with a 4xDVD burner from Pioneer. The hardware is complemented by a neat keyboard and a Mircosoft mouse.


The software package was extended by Pinnacle's InstantCopy and a tool for copying DVDs without copy protection. It also includes PowerDVD and the PowerDirector before CyberLink, the Microsoft Word, Works 7.0, Picture It! Photo 7.0, Autoroute 2002 and Encarta 2003 as well as the Nero burning software.


All components were convincing in the Praxistest. The graphics card achieved an outstanding result with 11,570 3DMark points. The same can be said about the hard drive from Seagate, which introduced in both the access time and the reading speed top marks. Good but not outstanding fast were the DVD drive and the burner. Interestingly, the burner in the CD test was faster than the DVD drive. In the new Aldi computer a very quiet fan is used as in the predecessor. Even with the case open, the titanium is hardly noticeable. The ATI graphics card's low-noise fan also contributes to the low noise level.


The Titanium MD 8008 was slightly less than its predecessor in terms of energy consumption. 154 watts during hard disk access and especially 4.7 watts when switched off are not good values. It is therefore advisable to switch off the computer via a plug-in strip or the power switch on the back.
