Canon Powershot SX50 HS: rubber problem at the eyepiece

Canon confirms that certain PowerShot SX50 HS digital cameras can discolor the gummed parts around the viewfinder eyepiece after a short time. This affects cameras produced between 1 September and 15 November 2013.

An investigation and analysis by the rubber manufacturer makes the substance Ziram (N, N'-dimethyldithiocarbamate) responsible for the discoloration of the rubber surface. The quantity detected on individual cameras has been minimal but can cause an allergic reaction to skin contact.

Powershot SX50 HS owners can use the respective serial number to determine whether their camera is affected by the problem. This is the case when the serial number to be found at the bottom of the cameras starts with a 69, 70 or 71 at the first and second position and a 1 at the sixth digit of the serial number.

Example for affected serial numbers: 69xxx1xxxxxx, 70xxx1xxxxxx, 71xxx1xxxxxx, where "x" is any number.

As of 13 January 2017 Canon will offer a free repair service for the cameras. Affected customers can contact their local Canon service.
