Seagate introduces new SSHD models

The two SSHDs “Laptop” and “Laptop Thin” benefit from the speed of the popular SSDs and at the same time the capacity of an old hard drive. The “Laptop Thin” -SSHD is only 7mm high and is specially designed for the thinnest notebooks and ultrabooks.

In the third generation of solid-state hybrid hard drives, Seagate is also launching an SSHD specifically for desktop PCs. Seagate promises with the new models up to 40 percent faster memory performance than with the previous SSHD generations. The "Laptop", "Laptop Thin" and the "Desktop SSHD" are to contribute around 30 percent to the overall performance of a system, regardless of the processor used.

With 5400 revolutions per minute, a Seagate SSHD is a standard hard drive five times faster, but still offers storage space of up to 2 TB. An SSHD is basically similar to a conventional mechanical hard disk. In order to increase the system performance, Seagate uses the same NAND flash memory for the SSHD, which is also used for the fast SSDs. Adaptive Memory technology identifies frequently used files and data, and then stores them in Flash memory. This results in faster boot and load times.

"Our new SSHDs enable users to instantly retrieve their favorite content - almost as if a turbo drive is plugged in, but capacity is not a thing to do without the new hard drives and the money bag is spared," said Scott Horn, vice president Marketing at Seagate.

When the new generation of SSHDs will be available for sale and what the individual models will cost is not yet known. However, it can be expected that the solid-state hybrid hard drives will be more expensive than standard hard drives but will be cheaper than SSDs per GB.
