Fritzbox settings transfer: step-by-step instructions

The AVM routers of the Fritzbox family offer numerous possibilities when it comes to the backup and restoration of the settings. Also the transmission of complex configurations on a new Fritz box is problem-free possible. In addition, AVM offers also tools, with which you can restore defective Fritzboxen. The procedures described here work with AVM DSL, LTE and cable devices.


Transfer settings to new box


In general, you should upgrade the Fritzbox to the latest version so that the backup and restoration works perfectly. From version Fritz OS 6.20 AVM has numerous improvements also integrated into the backup and restoration possibilities. However, since errors can also occur when updating to a new Fritz! OS version, it is useful to back up the data before the update (as described below under 1 to 4).

Make sure, however, that all settings of the target Fritzbox are overwritten with the settings of the source Fritzbox, which are stored in the backup file. However, there are two exceptions. If the destination box already contains phone numbers or ports, they remain in place even after the import. The numbers and release of the backup are added to the existing one.

Wireless phones, which you have registered with DECT on the Fritzbox, you have to re-connect, these are not automatically imported by the process. Fritz DECT repeaters and the Smart-Home devices from AVM are also not accepted. You will also need to log them manually after the transfer.


When the data is transferred, the settings of the WLAN are transferred, including the old name of the WLAN. If you use a new WLAN name on the new Fritzbox, you need to re-connect all WLAN devices and repeaters.
