Preview: The TV Trends of the IFA 2017

Nearly all well-known manufacturers were represented at the media briefing in Berlin and presented a selection of their innovations for the year 2017. The trends are clear: large LCD screens will astonish the trade fair visitors, UHD resolution provides megasharfe pictures, smart equipment, as it was hardly ever thought possible, enriches TVs and feeders. And Samsung makes sure that even eminently well-to-do cineasts get their money’s worth in the truest sense of the word thanks to breathtaking exclusivity. Here is our overview.

Ultra High Definition (4K) and giant TVs

Already earlier press events made it clear that Ultra High Definition will be the future TV standard. Now manufacturers are joining in, which have not yet had an offer. And what was still vague at the IFA last year is now self-evident: All TVs are equipped with HDMI 2.0 and the copy protection HDCP 2.2. So the UHD feed of Kinofilmen is secured. In addition, all new TVs are capable of using the high-performance data reduction codec HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding, H.265) to play UHD movies from storage media or from the Internet

High-End Smart

However, as a trade fair visitor, you should have an eye on how many of the built-in HDMI inputs correspond to the 2.0 standard, and whether these TV pictures with 50 hertz image change frequency take. TV receivers that master HEVC should probably not be found on this IFA in the serial devices.

New operating systems

You can look forward to exclusive UHD TVs from Loewe. The rehabilitated Kronach look back faithfully into the future and continue to develop their well-known "art" and "Connect" series. The TV installations of the high-end manufacturer combine the highest-quality design with the new peak pixel count. In addition, there is a love for the fine tone that the "SOEN" stereo concept should deliver. The premium TVs are available with the image diagonals around 102, 121 and 139 centimeters (40, 48 and 55 inches).

High Dynamic Range: Doubled contrast

TP Vision holds the Philips TV 65 PUS 9809 as the flagship. 164 centimeters of UHD image (65 inches) should provide sharpness. Color enthusiasm stains four-sided Ambilight around the screen. Another special feature is a cordless docking subwoofer that provides bass support.

Almost as a gigantomania one could look at the presented UHD-TVs from Samsung. Those who can place them at their own expense will, however, give priority to the feeling of enthusiasm. The UE 105 S9 W is a 266-centimeter TV (105-inch) in 21: 9 aspect ratio. Due to the cinemascope widescreen format, this giant even has an extended Ultra-HD resolution: Instead of 3.840 pixels in the horizontal, this has a spectacular 5.120. With such an image size, the Curved design can also be effectively developed, since you now actually get the feeling that the image orbits the viewer a bit and incorporates it into the scenery. Edel: The back wall of the exception TV is made of wood. The price: 120,000 euros.

Impressions of the IFA 2013

Surprisingly, it is "significantly cheaper" than the UHD-Edel-competitor UE 110 S9 Timeless (279 centimeters) from the same house. This costs 150,000 euros. For more normal mortals, Samsung also has four UHD stars with diagonals around 139 and 165 centimeters ready (55 and 65 inches). The Curved models of the HU 7100 and 7200 range cost between 2,200 and 3,350 euros.

The best model of Sony KD-85X9500B (215 centimeters) is also the best model. Here the price stands at 20,000 euros. The high-quality display can be picked up in the home cinema, optionally on high, lateral legs throning or with low feet for use on a rack. The 9005 B and 8505 B series are already well-known. They will be present together with the new Top-TV. The 9005s are displayed in the sizes 139, 164 and 200 centimeters (55, 65 and 79 inches), and the 8505 series is available with 123, 139 and 164 centimeters (49, 55 and 65 inches). The 65-inch sizes of the two series cost 4,200 and 3,500 euros.

The Grundig TVs, produced under the leadership of Turkish Koc Holding, will be enriched by the UHD Vision 8 series. They are also waiting in sizes of 139 and 165 centimeters. Prices are not yet known. However, due to the presentations of the previous IFA, it is expected that they will be in the entry segment.

Toshiba also makes its UHD debut, although the Japanese were not on the media briefing. M9 is not well-known yet, so you can be double-stretched. Panasonic plans to introduce the AXW 900 series at the IFA - a top-of-the-range series with all 4K honors. LG is also likely to have a lot in store.

All higher-quality new TVs are smart up to the outside edge. Red-Button services of the TV program providers within the framework of HbbTV skills already have all the smart-skiers in their pockets. The focus is on personal cloud services: the TV manufacturers offer storage space on the Internet, so that they can send photos, film clips and messages. This is the possibility to spontaneously record the experience in words and pictures, especially of mobile devices, whereupon the TV directly displays this news of the family. Protagonists of such concepts are LG, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony and Toshiba. But other smart activists such as Grundig and Philips TVs are also targeting the advanced form of networking.

Another new feature is the possibility to stream the live TV program received from his TV as well as his own hard disk recordings over the Internet to any place of reception around the world. Panasonic is the "inventor" of the smart variant of streaming and calls it "TV Anywhere". Whether other manufacturers pull here is still open. Streaming within the house is already a standard repertoire among the big manufacturers. Almost all of the new, higher-quality TV series are suitably equipped. Panasonic's DMR-BCT / BST 940 Blu-ray Disc Recorder, which is presented on the Media Briefing, also demonstrates how much smart technology Panasonic has to offer. The entire Smart Knowledge of the Japanese is compact. In addition, there is exclusive TV comfort with a triple tuner per receive path and a 2-terabyte hard drive.

Customer services are becoming more and more up-to-date, as they are known from Amazon. The TV evaluates the viewing habits of its owner and recommends corresponding TV broadcasts, VoD movies or clips from the Internet. For this purpose, however, viewers must be prepared to disclose the user's personal data to themselves.

With these new smart services, manufacturers are bringing together a number of other multimedia features, most of which are already well-known, which will put the TV at the center of the networking process.

To further enrich the variety of smart features and increase the response speed of the TV, some of the TV manufacturers are attacking their operating systems. LG will present Web OS, Philips TVs are waiting with Android. Panasonic is flirting with Firefox OS. The powerful platforms are designed to make the operation more flexible, enable fast games and provide an additional number of apps. Within the respective software family, you also want to facilitate the link between devices such as TV, smartphone and tablet.

The TV LEDs are now able to achieve more light output. In combination with direct LED technology, where the LEDs are located directly behind the screen, and local dimming for the partial shading of the screen, the TVs are now able to achieve approximately twice the brightness. At the same time, the black level in the image is maintained, resulting in immense contrasts. Panasonic, Philips, Sony and Toshiba TVs advertise with the picture feature. Each of them uses their own marketing name.

The 54th IFA in Berlin will start on September 5th and will last until September 10th. It is one of the largest and most important trade fairs for consumer electronics and white goods. The daily opening hours: 10 am to 6 pm. The day ticket costs 12 euros. 1,500 exhibitors presented their products on a total of 145,000 square meters of leased exhibition space.
