Bootmanager of Windows 7

The installation wizard also integrates the new system into the Windows 7 boot manager of your productive system. This is not located within the vhd file, but on the system partition in Windows 7, which also has access to the vhd file. You can easily change the name of the entries in this boot menu.

Virtual and real parallel

Boot your normal Windows 7, see the vhd file as a traditional file in the file system on the C disk or hard disk where you created the vhd file. If you back up this file, you have created a full backup of the virtual machine. You can also integrate this disk into the explorer of the productive Windows system using the action menu option in the disk management.

Customize the boot manager of Windows 7

On the other hand, if you are booting the Windows 7 installed in the vhd file, you will not see the vhd file because it is part of the system as a normal hard drive. The data from your real Windows 7 installation is seen as an additional hard drive, usually with the drive letter D. This allows you to share data between the systems.

Any changes you make in the Windows 7 virtual store store Windows within the vhd file. You can easily access the data from your real Windows installation in Windows Explorer.

To change the description in the boot manager, open a command line with administrative rights. If you enter bcdedit, the command line shows the installed operating systems, their entry in the bootmanager (description) and the path of the installation. To change the description, for example, boot the virtual system. To change the name of the virtual machine in the boot manager, type the command

Start the system next time, see the new label. If you also want to change your productive system, boot it and use the command

If you want to change the default operating system of the boot process, start the productive system and enter msconfig in the search field of the start menu. Then, go to the Home tab. Here you can now adjust the standard operating system. To remove the virtual system again, you can simply delete the boot entry of the virtual Windows 7 in msconfig on the startup call and remove the vhd file.

You have already cleansed your system. However, before you make any changes to the boot manager of Windows 7, you should save it beforehand. You can also use bcdedit in the command line. With the tool, you can also restore the boot manager if problems occur. The following commands are available:

Bcdedit / export - Creates a backup of the current configuration.

Bcdedit / import - Restores the boot manager from a created backup.

If you also want to adjust the order of the operating systems in the boot manager of Windows 7, you need a command prompt with administrative rights, which you can start from the context menu. Boot your productive system. Type bcdedit and remember the value for the operating system entry.

You can also copy the entry to the clipboard by opening the menu of the input prompt and selecting Edit \ Select. Select the entry Identifier and confirm with Enter. To adjust the order, use the
command

You can also include the vhd file on other computers in the boot manager. The process is very simple. You copy the file to the computer. Then, you start Windows 7 on the computer and a command line with administrative rights. In the first step, copy the entry of the current operating system to include the copy of the vhd file. To do this, use the
command

The command creates a new entry and a new identifier that you must remember. Then, paste the copied vhd file into the boot manager. To do this, use the two
commands

You must use the brackets at the path with. The next command will require some x86 systems for the virtual disk to function properly

If the computer has problems with the entry to boot, try the command

In this way, you can, for example, also include vhd files that you created with Disk2VHD. This tool is covered on the next page. However, this integration is not always easy because the file created by Disk2VHD is not always compatible with boot operations.

If your computer stops working, for example because you have configured the boot manager incorrectly, boot your computer with the Windows 7 DVD and select the computer representation options. Using these tools, you can easily repair the boat entry. If you do not have a Windows 7 DVD, you can also create a recovery CD when Windows is running.

To do this, click Start \ System Control \ System and Security \ Backup and Restore. Then, select the Create System Repair Disk link. If you boot Windows 7 with this disk, you can have the boot manager repaired.
