Ultra-HD TV Philips 65PFL9708S on the test

Even at the time of the picture tube Philips had the idea, with PixelPlus significantly more picture quality from TV standard sources to conjure. Meanwhile, our standard sources have full HD resolution, but the new Superpanels offer with Ultra HD four times as many pixels. For example, at PixelPlus, UltraPixel HD, a picture technique that combines the optimized sharpness of UltraResolution with the award-winning Motion Smoothing of Perfect Natural Motion 3D, has been developed at PixelPlus in many evolutionary stages.

Philips 65PFL9708S: Image quality

Behind these terms, which can hardly be explained by anyone, is a lot of image enhancement know-how. Thus, the 65PFL9708S analyzes each image source most precisely for noise, artifact blocks, color character, contrast range, real detail diversity and moving objects. It recognizes what has to be done to always deliver a perfectly brilliant, colorful, low-noise and messy image that does not even jerky. This is what he takes now and he calculates it to Ultra-HD resolution, smoothing object edges and refining lines.

Basically, any UHDTV devices tested are similar, but you should always keep in mind the complexity of the processes when you wonder why classic analog TV or DVB-T in Ultra HD does not look perfect. In these extreme cases the picture quality has only to be "screwed up" to a hundred times - and even this succeeds with this Philips with bravura. If you're looking for only high-quality content such as Blu-ray and HDTV, choose the many image enhancements that are configurable in a variety of settings.

The professional prefers an image that corresponds to the original, and recognizes when hard focus filters actually cover fine detailing. Everyone else will immediately be amazed by the clarity and intensity with which this Philips re-poles its sources to the Ultra-HD future. Even the perfect test photos, which we have received from our colleagues of the magazine ColorFoto, wanted to improve the Philips still. In fact, in their original resolution of 24 megapixels, they looked as stunning as you would expect from an Ultra HD TV.

However, previously downgraded versions on 4K resolution had a significantly coarse and unnatural hardness. Here Philips recognized potential for improvement and went to the work optimistically. With the appropriate settings, however, a slideshow was delivered again, which makes the heart of every photographer beat faster.

Practice: How 4K Upscaling works

From a distance of just one meter, no pixel structures can be seen any more - the finest detailed picture details. However, the color is restricted to the standard color space of JPEG corresponding to SD television. Adobe RGB is possible with many cameras and would be much more colorful, but remains the same as the use of the enormous color possibilities of the Ultra HDTV standard to future panel generations.

As far as the classic TV talents are concerned, one gets to the train full with the Philips. The digital signals from the four-way tuner can be recorded not only on a USB hard drive, but also on other Philips TVs of current series - even copy-protected. A tablet app with clear program guide may not be missing as a control aid. Even the mirroring of smart TV screens using Miracast is integrated. And the comprehensive Smart TV features do not need to be explained here. You only notice clearly that they run faster through the hex-core processor than with medium-class TVs.

With all praise, it should not be forgotten why the Philips missed the test victory against the devices of other manufacturers. On the one hand, it is due to the often-promised future security. Although no one can guaranty, where LG and Panasonic but 4K sources partly in real HEVC over USB or the net play, remains with Philips the screen still dark. After all, the Dutch have the prospect of upgrading the HDMI input # 5 (which can be 4K) to 60 frames per second as an upgrade.

Ultra HD - The new generation of television

When reproducing 4K movies, the same excellent color and contrast were found as with any source. However, this is limited to looking directly from the front. Even with slight deviation to the side washed out colors and the contrast impression suffers.

Clearly more advantages compared to competitors is the appearance of 3D films. The only available in Full HD, and here the combination of a 4K panel with the polarization technique is extremely pleasant. 3D movies are clean, deep-focus and flicker-free, and still offer harmonious movements.

Movements are, as mentioned at the beginning, a specialty of Philips image enhancers. The 65PFL-9708S provides the best intermediate image computation especially with "normal" TV films with 50 Hz. For 24p Blu-rays, he wants to smoothen too much despite the setting "min" and shows more artefacts than the competitor of LG.
