A design prize will probably not win the Olympus Stylus 1. For that the viewfinder on the camera top for the relatively small Kamerabody but a bit too big. But with that, we have already landed at the great advantage of the camera. Obviously, Olympus places less importance on the look, because of its size and functionality. And the Stylus-1-viewfinder in the compact camera class is completely unrivaled, but more on that later.
Also interesting is
Angular, angular, compact and quite OM-D-like comes with the housing of the Olympus Stylus 1, which weighs approximately 400 grams in the hand. The right-hand camera front side is designed like a handle and coated with a non-slip plastic. On the back of the camera, the position for the thumb is equipped accordingly, so the Olympus Stylus 1 is safe and secure to hold. At all, the entire processing of the camera is fundamental. All mechanical elements are designed for intensive use and promise robustness and durability.

Even the numerous mechanical controls (18 in number) allow for a corresponding number of functions. The main setting dial, P, A, S, M, two user memories C1, C2 and four other main settings are provided on the left side of the camera. To adjust the desired values on the Olympus Stylus 1, you can use an additional setting wheel on the right side of the camera or the four-way button. On the camera front side there is an Fn button and a setting lever, and a second zoom lever on the left side of the lens.
Conclusion
And not enough: around the lens is the so-called control ring attached and on the camera back a further Fn button as well as buttons for different settings. This is not just confusing at first sight. Therefore, it is advisable to keep the operating instructions of the Olympus Stylus 1 close at hand. The mechanical quality of all controls and their marking are, however, good - and the function then gradually becomes ...
There are two recording menus, a playback menu, a user menu and a setup menu. For all, the mechanical controls help to equalize the multitude of menu functions and make them more manageable. Values for fast access are stored on Fn keys, levers and control ring. It is also possible to store the complete settings for specific recording situations under C1 and C2 and to recall them if necessary.
The 3-inch display of the Olympus Stylus 1 is sharp and can be tilted up and down for special shooting situations, so "overhead shots" are also possible. A special feature of this display is the additional touchscreen function. However, it is limited to focusing with the finger and triggering the camera.
We had already expressed our opinion about the aesthetic value of the viewfinder, but the purpose here clearly justifies the means: The Olympus Stylus 1 is finally a compact camera with a viewfinder, which actually allows a picture evaluation. The viewfinder is better than with some entry-level SLR and the generous construction also allows spectacle wearers sufficient insight. All in all, an absolutely successful design in which all fonts and symbols are also perfectly legible.
The lens of the Olympus Stylus 1 offers with 28-300 mm KB a practice-oriented area, which is at most limited in the wide angle. The special feature of this optics is the continuous light intensity of 2.8, which ensures sufficient light and the creative play with the sharpening depth even with longer focal lengths. Together with the fast serial speed (maximum 7.2 frames per second until the memory card is full) and the fast autofocus (0.25s in the wide angle, 0.34s in the telephoto), the Stylus 1 has all the prerequisites for an ideal snapshot camera
To keep dirt and fingerprints away from the front lens, the Stylus1 has a lid with automatically closing slats. When the camera is turned on, the extended lens pushes these lamellas aside to the "open" position. When the camera is switched off, the lens moves back into the resting position and the springy louvres completely cover the front lens of the optics. You can also unscrew this screw cap to attach a converter or other accessory instead.
A small flash is integrated. On tactile pressure, he quickly jumps out of the viewfinder housing, with light finger pressure he is pushed back in resting position. An external flash can be installed on the flash shoe, at the top of the viewfinder. A WLAN module allows wireless photo transmission as well as remote control of the camera.
The 1 / 1.7 inch sensor of the Olympus Stylus 1 with 12 megapixel resolution belongs to the standard in the upper class. The resolution in the wide angle starts with almost 1,500 LP / BH at ISO 100 and remains up to ISO 1,600 clearly above the 1,200 mark. That's OK. The telephonic performance with about 1150 LP / BH fits, too, the strong edge loss in the wide angle (approx. 450 LP / BH) trims the overall impression somewhat. The performance at ISO 400 does not quite approach the input sensitivity, but is quite OK for a compact. So you can recommend this sensitivity. It is then as expected as downhill.
Alternatives: The best compact cameras in the gallery
Overall, the Olympus Stylus 1 reaches a very good 69 points and is enthusiastic with a viewfinder that has so far been unrivaled in the compact class. But it costs about 600 euros but about as much as the significantly better Sony RX100 with 1-inch sensor. The market alone decides on success or failure.
The Olympus Stylus 1 is an all-round compact camera that sets a new benchmark in the field of viewfinders. However, the Olympus is also expensive to pay.
