The roughly 70 euro expensive HDR Darkroom 6 is available for Windows from XP and Mac OSX from 10.6. This is a 32-bit software, so it can access a maximum of two to four gigabytes of memory. However, in the test with four 10-megapixel images, the software did not need more than 700 megabytes. HDR Darkroom also does not benefit from multi-core processors.
Required functions available
The program works only as a single application and does not integrate as a plugin in Photoshop and Co. This makes the selection of images more difficult, especially with RAW photos, which are often displayed in Windows without preview images. The setup wizard will ask for ghosting reduction and alignment - and whether to guess the exposure of the individual photos or read them from the EXIF information. Then you land in an overview without editing functions. On the left are icons, including a histogram icon, which then leads to sound mapping.
Test Conclusion
HDR Darkroom offers the same three tonemapping options as the competitor HDR Photo Pro (even with identical names: "Local Color Matching", "Local Color Enhancer", and "Fast Color Compressor"). Compared to the competitor, however, the number of controllers is significantly reduced - only the most necessary functions are available. Templates are also not on board, after all, users are allowed to create their own. In terms of image quality, HDR Darkroom is still convincing. Ghost images are not available in the street scene - top. The program saves the program as a JPEG or TIF or as a 32-bit file for later editing.
