The Sony KDL-60LX905

60 inches is currently the maximum size in which LCD TVs are manufactured. Sony has added many more technical treats to the 153-cm giant image next to 3D.

The TV monument

Sony has already launched a small revolution in the 3D market in our last issue of 08/10, when the KDL-46HX805 (test: from page 38) showed the most brilliant 3D-TV ever and did not make the neon light of our test rooms unbearable Flickering. Now it's time for the next round: his biggest relative of the "Signature" series will appear.

Pure luxury

The noble KDL-60 LX 905 was designed in Sony's new "monolith" design and inspires even when switched off. Its elegant, dark front looks as if from a cast, the angled edges like the case corners are processed accurately and the subtly brushed look. And after we had balanced the 50 kg colossus on the laboratory truck, we got a clue, which can make a properly stable metalworking.

Art at picture

Not just for the good looks from any angle is also that the back connections are completely hidden behind covers.

However, the inner values must not be inferior to the high-quality exterior. In addition to the triple HD tuner with the CI Plus option, Sony also integrated a WLAN transmitter, because the stylish, modern target group will want to use new online functions without having to lay cables or tolerate hanging adapters on the device

Here, Sony has not only been able to score points thanks to the DFB cooperation, which contains a lot of exclusive video material, but is now also integrating interesting content from various TV stations and media houses. This is complemented by a lot of Yahoo! Widgets (Sniplets), which bring a lot of information and entertainment on the screen, but can not be placed over the current TV program.

Complementing access to the DLNAHeimnetzwerk and logging in as a renderer (content can be actively directed to the TV), multimedia happiness is almost perfect. By the way, the USB port also acts as a data interface for all those who still carry their photos, music and videos on to mass storage.

It is not so obvious that the largest currently available LCD panel is also 3D-capable. Actually, it must be 200 Hz-suitable, so that flicker is suppressed also in the room operation. Here, the image build-up phases are distributed to two eyes, so that from 200 hertz 100.

Sony uses a marketing trick here and calls its electronics "Motionflow 200Hz PRO", suggesting it is better than last year's "Motionflow 200Hz". However, the fact is that this is only a motion-smoothed 100 Hz with an intelligent switching 100 Hz backlight, explains the uneasy image in 3D mode. In the small Sony of the last edition, the flicker was less noticeable than with this real large-screen TV.

The KDL-60 LX 905 is based on outstanding electronics. The image processing produces a standard color space with well-balanced grayscale, the gamma correction works even with maximum contrast without saturation error. In addition, there are many useful image optimizations such as the multi-stage contrast automatic, color optimization, the limitation of maximum luminance and noise filters.

However, the latter can not prevent poor source material - even very good DVDs - to reveal all their coding errors in a crystal-clear way, even with a minimum sharpness setting.

Sony's panel is designed for economy. No TV of this size could boast a power consumption of just over 110 watts. The efficiency of the panel of 1.78 cd / W is exemplary, but it is bought by an economical illumination. The giant image of side LEDs illuminate can hardly be done better, but brings a clearly recognizable hotspot in test pictures.

In the film the brightness concentration does not interfere with the center of the image. The loss of the black value and the displacement of the gamma curve, which lead to color changes as soon as one is distant from a lateral angle, have a considerably worse effect.

Another important innovation makes Sony the perfect power saver. In addition to the light sensor, which lowers luminance and power consumption in the evening, a camera with face detection performs its service. It detects whether there are still viewers present and, if necessary, switches off the TV.

This works better than last year's version with a heat-motion sensor. The camera can also turn off the TV when children crouch too close to the unit, or it adjusts the stereo balance of the sitting position on the sofa - beautiful new TV world.

Sony also owns the 3D image with the fewest ghost images in 60 inches. But the strong luminosity and clear contours are bought by too much restlessness.

On our microscope image of the Sony you can see how the tracks cross the red area. Very noticeable is that the lower blue subpixel hardly emits light. This can be explained by the much higher native color temperature of the panel.

After adjustment to 6500 K, less blue has to be generated, so that every sixth subpixel hardly has anything to do with it. Amazingly, how efficient the Sony TV can still convert power to light energy.
