LaCie rugged USB 3.0

External hard drives are not easy. Above all, the handy 2.5-inch models are gladly taken along and are thus exposed to many dangers. At least the impact sensitivity LaCie wants to encounter with a rubber sleeve, which surrounds the hard disk housing in the form of a ring.

It can be easily removed and you could also open the panel housing, but warning labels that would tear thereon warn against a loss of warranty. Included in the package is a 10 GB on-line storage, which is free in the first year.

The drive is connected via a mini USB 3.0 cable which has been short-circuited with 50 centimeters. LaCie is the only manufacturer to provide a USB power cable. This is just 20 centimeters longer and proved in the test as necessary: In our control test with a gigabyte motherboard, the operating system recognized the LaCie only with additional power. This is a good remedy for the otherwise good impression.

After the first startup, an Autostart software asks which drive you want to use the drive for. By default, the entire drive is formatted as one partition. If you want to exchange data with other computers and operating systems, the software divides the drive into two partitions, one of which is formatted with FAT 32.
