Fujifilm X-T1 in hands-on: Great cinema in compact form

The Seeker - great cinema

The Fujifilm X-T1 looks the same as expected in the run-up to the rumors. And the first impression is not deceptive - internally digital, it gives itself externally completely classical with familiar controls. The X-T1 makes a very valuable overall impression. The direct dials turn out to be good-looking and readable. Far left on the camera the ISO ring, including the series exposure exposure. To the right of this is the time ring with the underlying field selection. On the far right of the Fujifilm X-T1 is not as easy to adjust as with X-E / X-M accidentally adjusted exposure correction. The iris is selected on the lens ring, even if there is no aperture value.

Secure automatic, clean image quality

Directly at the trigger of the Fujifilm X-T1 is the fast on / off switch, right next to it, just as fast, reach the video direct start button. Something more hidden is the Wi-Fi button for the WLAN positioned, which can also be occupied with other functions. Thanks to its well-shaped handle, the Fujifilm X-T1 is safe and secure. The extra Akkugriff gives even more stability, especially in the case of high-format recordings, but at the expense of the charm of a design that is otherwise quite compact for a camera in the SLR design.

In any case, the large viewfinder housing dominates the camera in the center. The view into the promising large eyepiece does not disappoint. In the viewfinder the Fujifilm X-T1 offers with its enlargement of an effective 0.77x very large cinema. Even the much more expensive, heavier and heavier Canon EOS 1Dx (0.76x) and Nikon D4 (0.7) with optical prismatic search no longer offer.

The Fujifilm X-T1 also has the advantage of an electronic viewfinder and offers three display modes for the image. Very large, only with a narrow, black edge to display the most important data up to a distance display is the best. Who wants, the picture can also show as in the XE-2 slightly smaller with larger edges also on the sides, but why? For manual focusing, the third variant is helpful. In addition to the actual motif, she also shows the central section in black and white with the digital intersection indicator as a focusing aid in a second picture. For this purpose, Fuji uses the signals from the phase detection pixels of the X-Trans II CMOS sensor.

Overall, the X-T1 viewfinder has proven to be a new benchmark, in which others can be measured immediately. So big, beautiful and clear I have not seen my motifs in any other electronic viewfinder. This is also due to the speed of response of the Fujifilm OLED viewfinder also for movements. The desire for an optical Prismensucher came with me no longer.

The Fujifilm X-T1's LCD monitor, which can be tilted up and down, is also a useful alternative when shooting overhead or from the frog perspective, or when you want to communicate with the subject during a portrait shot without a big block in front of your head

Fuji also continues its course of the clear operating structure in the menus for the numerous detail settings. The Fujifilm X-T1 gave me no puzzles during our first, unfortunately only one-hour learning-up, with a short foray over Düsseldorf airport.

With the dynamic range control and ISO values - according to my previous good experiences with the X-E1 - to "Auto" the partly strong contrasts and changing lighting conditions were also no problem for the X-T1. The ISO-automatic system usually chose ISO 400, sometimes ISO 200 or 500, for the internal shots. This is completely uncritical in view of the qualities of the Fujifilm sensor and image processor, as confirmed by the Fujifilm X-2 test >

With ISO 800 practically no increase in the noise is recognizable, even ISO 1,600 and 3,200 fall in the picture of the image only on closer inspection in critical areas. The automatic panpanorama, which is automatically combined with a small edge offset at one point, shows how well the X-T1 is still with ISO 4.000

Exposure metering and AF are inconspicuous (as it should be) and their services are accurate. The Fujifilm X-T1 is a well-balanced contrast medium with a very wide range of light and shadow. Different color temperatures, including mixed light situations, has the X-T1 very well under control. However, the AF did not have to cope with high-speed motifs. The model portrait, taken with ISO 100 and f / 5.6, gives a good impression of the sharpness and detail richness of the X-T1 images. What can be done with ISO 25.600 is the "monitoring photo" with the cars in the garage.

A small mistake, as I do not know of countless photos taken with an X-E1 photos, made the X-T1. Photos of a walkway access with a metallic ripple structure on the ground show some moiré in two places at 100 percent display on the monitor. On the other hand, very powerful moiré effects occurred in a video of a roller-tread access with its numerous transverse and longitudinal ribs. We will see at the lab test whether this is perhaps still a problem of the early X-T1 series specimen.

The extraordinary good impression of the Fujifilm X-T1 does not diminish in my opinion. The X-T1 is the first choice for those who are looking for the finest digital camera technology in a classic camera and proven operation. The price of 1,200 euros for the body is fair. According to the Sony Alpha A7 (test), the Fujifilm X-T1 could be the next nail on the coffin of mechanical SLR technology with rattles in digital cameras.
