Nikon D5: All details for the release of the DSLR-Topmodell

The Nikon D5 with its release as a new top model the D4s from the throne of the DSLR portfolio of Nikon. On Tuesday the professional SLR camera was presented at the CES 2017 in Las Vegas – in March 2017 the full-format DSLR is to come onto the market. After the rumors, we will summarize all the innovations and technical facts about the Nikon D4.


Upgrade for the autofocus


In the D5 Nikon integrates the new AF system Multi-CAM 20K with TTL phase detection. It offers a total of 153 measurement fields and 99 cross sensors. 55 auto-focus points can now be selected manually. The AF sensitivity is up to -4 LW (ISO 100).


Support for 4K video


Enhanced, the Nikon D5 also shows at the serial screen speed. The DSLR now provides up to 12 frames per second for exposure metering and AF tracking, or 14 frames per second with a high-fledged mirror. The buffer memory is sufficient for 200 RAW images and thus allows long recording series. A new exposure measurement sensor with 180,000 RGB pixels is used for motor detection.


Proven basic equipment


In terms of sensor technology, the Nikon D5 is based on a full-size CMOS (35.9 mm x 23.9 mm) with a resolution of 20.8 megapixels - with the Nikon D4s (test) it was still 16.2 megapixels. In conjunction with the new image processing engine Expeed 5, Nikon promises improved image quality and color gradation. Nikon has also saved on the light sensitivity - this is enough for the D5 from ISO 100 to ISO 102,400 and can be extended to "Hi 5" mode to an extreme ISO 3.280.000


Price and availability


A further innovation compared to the previous model is the support for the recording of videos in the 4K-UHD format. The Nikon D5 records 4K movies with 30p / 25p / 24p and a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, in full HD resolution, 50p and 60p are also available as image rates. The MOV format is used with H.264 compression.


The Nikon D5 has a dual XQD memory card slot and a USB 3.0 port to handle the amount of data. Not on board is a WLAN module. An external transmitter must also be purchased for this purpose.


The D5 case has been slightly reworked and now weighs 1,235 grams and measures 158 x 160 x 92 mm. The 3.2-inch LCD monitor for image control now resolves with 2.359.000 pixels - compared to 921,000 pixels with the D4s. The Pentaprismensucher offers a 100% image coverage at 0.72x magnification.
