More Tools

A tool for viewing PDF files is missing in any Windows version. A good replacement for the otherwise recommended Adobe Reader is the free Foxit Reader. It starts on most PCs faster than the Adobe Reader and is also more fluid during PDF playback.

PDF viewer: Foxit Reader

Practical: By default Foxit Reader is installed with a Firefox plug-in, so you can view clicked PDFs directly in the Firefox browser. Make sure that the appropriate check mark is selected during setup.

Photo management: Picasa

In Windows 7, Microsoft has granted Windows Explorer some functionality to view and edit photos. There is no real image management in the operating system. We recommend the free Picasa program from Google. Digital images can be easily sorted, tagged and presented as a slideshow.

Also interesting is

Picasa also offers many possibilities for post-processing the images. The software works hand in hand with the Picasa Web Albums: If you have a Google Account, you can upload images from Picasa to the Web.

Burning Tool: DeepBurner

The Windows proprietary functions for burning CDs and DVDs are rather modest. Luckily, there is DeepBurner, a free burning program. It is a real alternative to known buying software like Nero. DeepBurner can burn data CDs and data DVDs, music and photo CDs. It supports the BurnProof technology, which automatically controls the writing speed when burning so that burn errors are largely ruled out.

For burn professionals, DeepBurner offers the unique possibility to design a custom Autostart menu: For example, CDs and DVDs can be created with software that offers a program selection when inserting. The integrated label printer lets you design and print CD / DVD covers, booklets and labels.

The Windows Media Player can not measure with the free VLC media player yet. VLC plays files in any conceivable video or audio format. The vast majority of known video codecs are integrated into the program, eliminating the need to install so-called codec packs.

VLC plays home MPEG2 and DivX, Quicktime and Real Media videos. As a result, VLC users do not usually need to install another media player. The appearance of the VLC Media Player can be customized using so-called skins.

The VLC Media Player can play both video and music, but it is not good for large music collections. This is best done with the free program Songbird. This allows music files not only to be cataloged and reproduced - the software also facilitates the transfer of music to mobile devices. In addition, there are custom Songbird applications (apps) for many smartphones.

On the Windows Live Skydrive, Microsoft provides 25 GB of free online storage. However, the access to the private network hard disk becomes only comfortable with SDExplorer. The free tool integrates the Windows Live Skydrive into Windows Explorer, so you can use online storage like a hard drive.

After installation you will find the folder "SDExplorer" under "Computer". Enter your credentials (Live ID and Password) and tick anywhere to save the data for later.

Colorfoto.de Sony Alpha 200

Approximately one and a half years after the release of the Alpha 100, Sony brings the successor model Alpha 200 at a moderate price of about 600 euros for the case. For the set with 18-70 mm standard zoom the usual small surcharge of around 100 euros is to be paid. This manufacturer’s deliberately low price threshold for the first interchangeable lens is likely to have entangled many people from the compact camera family in the past few years and thus contributed substantially to the success of digital SLR cameras.

The pronounced similarity in the frontal view between alpha 100 and 200 is relativized on closer inspection. At the same time, the camera still removes a piece of the former model Dynax 5D. Example: In the case of the Alpha 100, in addition to the operating mode dial on the right side of the housing, the second mode dial, taken from the Dynax, was found to the left of the viewfinder prism. With this one had access to exposure measurement method, autofocus mode, sensor sensitivity (ISO value), automatic contrast correction and color mode. In addition, the function key (Fn) was integrated into the dial dial. This was moved to the rear of the Alpha 200, the left mode dial was painted without replacement. In its place is now the mode dial with 12 detent positions for standard and motif programs; on the right side of the housing, there are only two buttons for ISO setting and image sequence mode (single and series, self-timer, exposure series).

In the so-called creative mode (shooting menu), the camera allows various presets for color and contrast adjustment. In addition to a black-and-white and AdobeRGB mode, there are six sRGB-based presets (Standard, Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, Night, and Sunset). All RGB presets can be adjusted in the parameters Contrast, Color and Sharpness. The Alpha 200 has been discontinued with functions for the subsequent processing of images, as competition models increasingly offer it.

A feature taken from Dynax times is the image stabilizer built into the housing, which can be switched on via a sliding switch on the back. It is to expand the freehand limit according to manufacturer by 2.5 to 3.5 light values. The Dynax models also feature the characteristic flash shoe and the ADI measuring flash controller. Even the built-in pop-up flash works with this technique, but has the disadvantage, as with the Alpha 100, that it folds up little over the optical axis in the folded out, and red eyes are a frequent companionship in portraits. Konica Minolta has done better with the Dynax 5D. The flash can be corrected in its intensity, but only via the camera name.

A new addition to the accessory range is the VG-B30 AM handheld, which is equipped with two NP-500H lithium-ion batteries, one of which is used in the camera. The handle facilitates camera operation in portrait format and improves the balance in combination with larger interchangeable lenses. The case is quite light with 532 g and does not give the thumb on the back of the case a lot of support. On the other hand, the large rubber eyelid, which surrounds the viewfinder, was well liked. The effective search magnification is 0.53 - the Nikon D40x (0.51) and better than the Canon EOS 400D (0.48).

The TFT monitor, which is enlarged from 2.5 to 2.7 inches, also displays all the recording-relevant data. In this case, pressing the display key activates a display with particularly large letters, while the second press calls a display with smaller (but still readable) fonts and higher information density. In the first case, exposure corrections are indicated numerically with a comma point (eg -0.7), in the second case a bar scale. In the display window itself you can not correct corrective, as one knows about the Olympus or Panasonic.

Further settings can be achieved via the already mentioned Fn button: flash mode (including long-time sync), exposure metering method, AF mode, AF field configuration, white balance and improved dynamic range (D-R) compared to its predecessor. It can be set to "Standard" and "Advanced", but can also be switched off. The Alpha 700 has been discontinued. If you change the camera mode from portrait to portrait (or vice versa), the display is adjusted accordingly. When the camera is set to the eye, the display on the monitor goes off automatically, and the autofocus is activated even before you press the shutter button. This function, called "Eye-Start-AF", can also be disabled.

The autofocus still operates with nine measuring fields, the middle one of which is a cross sensor. Sony wants to have improved AF speed by improvements in drive motor and control by a factor of 1.7. The triggering delay, which is determined in the test laboratory, including the AF time, is clearly shorter than the alpha 100 (0.42 s) at 0.24 s - a good development.

A little more than half a second after switching on the camera is ready for operation. The possible image sequence time is not high with 2.6 images per second, but is OK for this camera class. The usable ISO range compared to the Alpha 100 has been extended from ISO 1600 to 3200 - the stated ISO maximum is not defined as a "push level", but as a normal setting value. This should not, however, obscure the fact that it rains at higher sensitivities.

Already at ISO 400, the camera has a VN 1.8 in a region that is generally known for cameras with a four-thirds sensor and ISO 800/1600 (VN 2,9 / 4,8) Continue The noise can be significantly improved by the switchable noise reduction (High ISO-RM), which according to the manufacturers at ISO 1600 and 3200 intervenes. Then the noise at ISO 1600 decreases from VN 4.8 to 2.6 and at ISO 3200 from VN 11.5 to 5.0, with the resolution decreasing by negligible 43/10 LP / BH at ISO 1600/3200. The object contrast is 9 screens at ISO 100, but decreases with ISO 400 to 8 screens, with ISO 800 to 7.5 and with ISO 1600 to 6.5 screens. Switching on the noise reduction increases the object contrast by a half-aperture for ISO 1600 and 3200.

The high scores for the picture quality are the result of the resolution of the Alpha 200: 1282/1310 LP / BH is a result which is clearly above that of other cameras with a 10 megapixel sensor. Only the Sony Alpha 700 is even better under the cameras with APS-C format sensor (1335/1358 LP / BH at ISO 100/400). The bottom line is 60.5 points for the image quality at ISO 100 and 57.5 points at ISO 400.

Evaluation according to new test criteria

Sony Alpha 200

The Sony Alpha 200 scores with a built-in image stabilizer. It offers the highest resolution in its price category up to 500 euros, which concerns the setting of ISO 100 and gets the evaluation well. With higher sensitivity from ISO 400, the image quality, the image noise and the kurtosis values (loss of texture) are reduced. In the case of ISO 1600, the lower range of the test field, which is difficult to evaluate, is reduced. After all, the unit has a low shutter release delay, which provides a direct photographer experience.

7 Multifunction devices with WLAN

It used to be better! Really everything? With regard to multifunctional devices, this is not quite true. The multinationals have been the most successful bureaus ever since a few years. In the past, you had a hard time, since they were only given birthdays of at least one generation, compared to their single-function counterparts.

Multifunction devices: ink cost

The "artificial downgrade" was somehow understandable, because who wants to sell as well as Multis also printers and scanners, must finally offer the customer an incentive, to two or three individual devices, the FAX included, instead of a space-saving allrounder >

Guide: To print from a network

Older printers delivered significantly poorer print quality and slower printing speeds, and this was a powerful argument for many customers to say no again. Back then, anyway. It's different today. Multis are equipped with the best printers in their class. Therefore, hardly a customer buys an A4 printer and the next day an A4 scanner.

The multifunctional devices have actually retired these two device categories. If you are going to an electric market today, you have to look for a pensioner. If at all, there are proven printing specialists, who are characterized by 8-, 9- or 10-color printing systems, processing formats up to DIN A3 or, in the field of SW photoprint, thanks to various gray inks to printerelite.

Today even multifunctional machines to the road price of less than 100 Euro achieve high-gloss photoprint results, which are absolutely satisfying. Even photos that come from a Brother or a Lexmark are now absolutely top-notch.

Buying advice: Wireless router

And this is due not least to the fact that the manufacturers have sworn to multis and equipped them with the best printing units that they have. Brother gives full three-year warranty on his print heads and Lexmark even five years after registration of the device.

And that is something to be desired with a high-performance mechanical system, which catapults itself at a furious speed and fires explosively like ink from thousands of microscopic nozzles. But some things have also gotten much worse than before.

Since the ISO standards have been used as a rangefinder by nearly all manufacturers - Lexmark is still an abomination - these results are diligently striving to convince customers with seemingly impressive figures. However, one of these "side-ways" is certainly one thing: the price per page and the comparability with earlier models.

Guide: 80 clever freeware tools

We therefore decided to stay with the old data in the near future. We continue to quote the price per SW page at five percent coverage, the price for a 10x15 photo and an A4 photo.

By the way, one can say that the manufacturers are really fierce. The secondary costs of relatively low-cost multinationals are by no means to be underestimated. For a SW side, HP, Lexmark and the Canon Pixma MX410 are about 8 cents mature, Brother even hits nearly 13 cents.

Only with the Kodak Office 2170 and the MG5250 you get with 4 and 5 cents respectively. But you pay with these in the photoprint properly on it. Read more about this in the individual discussions of the devices.

LG 47LM960V in the test

Filigran looks the construction: For this reason, one finds in the unfortunately unclear manual on a whole page hints on how to carry the device, which, by the way, is very stable. The online help of the TV, which is also available for download as a PDF file, is, however, much more pleasant.

LG 47LM960V: features

The direct LED panel produces its motifs with a 200 Hertz refresh rate. The LED backlighting is also dimmed in zones, which means that the black is on the screen.

The Magic Remote, which is included with the standard transmitter, works with motion detection. The mouse pointer in the implanted web browser is also easy to navigate in the air.

Buy Philips 47PFL6007K at the cheapest

The smartphone app also works perfectly. For example, you can make a screenshot and share it with Twitter or Facebook. 3D sources and signals converted by the electronics into 3D images transform the polarizing lenses into very spatial settings, although they appear a little rough.

Important against ghost contours: TruMotion should be set to soft. Thus, only small vertical structures in the image produce even smaller outliers.

The current pollin offers

With the bicycle and hiking avi TEASI ONE, Pollin offers a versatile, optimized for the application purpose. The device works with special bicycle navigation software and has on-board OSM cards. It controls both the turn-by-turn navigation with the map and the arrow, turn instructions with the switch from trip computer to the map display, and the routing calculation for incorrect turnaround.

The integrated trip computer is equipped with GPS compass and provides all important data including graphical route, altitude and speed profile. There is also a detailed track recorder - just to name a few of the extensive feature list. The Navi costs 149 euros at Pollin, which is clearly below the competitor's offer.

The SAT / DVB-T / DVB-C HDTV receiver DR-HD433SCT from Pollin is equipped with a triple tuner and thus allows the reception of digital TV and radio programs via satellite, the terrestrial antenna or the cable connection. It is also possible to use the USB 2.0 port, PVRready (recording and playing TV broadcasts via a connected USB hard disk), as well as a timeshift function. A further special feature is the possibility to edit the station list on the PC. The versatile unit costs € 99 for Pollin.

The USB hard drive CnMemory Core USB3.0 offers not only fast 2 TBytes of memory, but also a stylish housing. The 3.5-inch hard drive requires a (supplied) power supply via a power supply. The data transfer rate should be up to 5 Gbps. The price for a 2 TByte hard drive is particularly favorable at Pollin 84.95 euros.
